Sompo has a unique opportunity for an AVP, Underwriter on our Excess Casualty Retail team. Our U.S. Excess Casualty team brings significant expertise and deep-seated relationships with select appointed retail brokers. We offer meaningful in-house capacity, a consistent underwriting approach, timely and efficient turnaround, and an experienced claims team. This position will be based in our Chicago, IL office. Our business, your impact, our opportunity: Own and manage a complex Retail Excess Casualty portfolio, underwriting new and renewal business to drive profitable growth in line with risk appetite and business strategy. Exercise underwriting authority to structure, price, and negotiate Excess Casualty placements, including attachment points, limits, terms, and conditions across diverse risks. Serve as a market-facing leader, representing the organization in broker and client meetings, industry events, and strategic relationship discussions. Partner with Claims, Legal, Actuarial, and Business Development to deliver informed, consistent, and value-driven underwriting decisions. Communicate and reinforce the Retail Excess Casualty value proposition and appetite to brokers while developing targeted strategies to retain and grow key relationships. Monitor market conditions, competitive trends, and regulatory developments to inform portfolio management and underwriting strategy. Leverage data, analytics, and underwriting tools to support disciplined pricing, workflow efficiency, and overall portfolio performance. What you'll bring: 8+ years of Commercial Excess Casualty underwriting experience. Strong expertise in Commercial Excess Casualty underwriting; construction experience preferred. Proven ability to underwrite, price, and negotiate complex accounts across a range of sizes, industries, and exposures. Demonstrated track record of disciplined underwriting and profitable portfolio management. Solid financial acumen and sound underwriting judgment, with the ability to make informed business decisions within authority. Strong relationship management and communication skills with experience partnering effectively with brokers, insureds, and internal teams. Ability to travel up to 25% as needed to support broker and client relationships. Salary Range: $120,000 - $195,000. Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
