IronGrid, San Francisco, CA, United States
Manufacturing Underwriter / Senior Underwriter
IronGrid builds insurance products for the most complex and advanced physical systems. We have developed a new modeling infrastructure that allows us to underwrite risk where traditional insurers cannot. We are moving quickly into emerging markets and creating entirely new classes of insurance. We are well-funded and backed by leading investors. If you are smart, aggressive, and are looking for meaningful ownership and responsibility, we want to work with you. The Role
As our first underwriter, you will manage both line and portfolio underwriting for our core policy line. You'll bring a proven track record of managing a book and apply portfolio-level underwriting judgment to a new class of manufacturing and automation risks. You'll shape coverage, support key product decisions, and work closely with founders and external partners. You Will
Lead underwriting strategy for a core line of business. Leverage and continue to develop IronGrid's internal models and underwriting framework. Develop and maintain strong broker and distribution relationships. Drive portfolio management: selection, pricing oversight, aggregation considerations, and pipeline forecasting. Represent IronGrid externally with brokers, carriers, and reinsurers. Collaborate closely with founders. Contribute input to regulatory filings and respond to state insurance department inquiries. Who We're Looking For
4+ years of commercial underwriting, or risk ownership in tech or hardware. Exposure to manufacturing, automation, or technical risk. Strong technical background, including comfort working with data, models, or code (e.g., Python, SQL, or similar) Full life-cycle experience across submission review, underwriting analysis, indications/quotes/binders, and marketing to brokers. Curious, pragmatic, and comfortable navigating ambiguity. Our Values
Work hard. Be blunt. Move fast. Interview Process
Expect a founder-led interview process. The process is designed to reflect what it would be like to work with us day to day. We will discuss real challenges we are facing and expect candidates to bring thoughtful, practical insights to the conversation. Compensation
Base salary $115,000 $185,000, plus equity and performance bonus potential.
