Plumber (Skilled Trade Specialist II)

– Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall Airport), Anne Arundel County, MD.

Description The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA) is the owner and operator of BWI Thurgood Marshall and Martin State Airports, serving over 27 million passengers annually.

Employees in this class are required to perform various duties such as:

Installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and natural gas equipment, piping, valves, and fittings in compliance with the Maryland State and International Plumbing Codes.

Installing valves and piping from ‘A’ to 12”. Installation and repairs to showers, lavatories, water closets, faucets, and urinals.

Fitting copper pipes and fittings using assorted flux, solder, and brazing materials.

Using different types of gases (e.g., MAP and acetylene) to fit and cut copper and steel pipes. Installing steel, water, and natural gas piping by using power threaders, grovers, and cutters.

Troubleshooting and repairing sewage ejector pumps, motors, and controls.

This maintenance work requires physical exertion, may be performed outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDOT MAA building, and may involve moving objects over 50 pounds, working on high poles or in cramped or underground spaces. Employees are essential employees subject to emergency call‑back procedures and may work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

High school graduation or high school equivalency certificate.

Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing. Two years of this experience must involve service and repair of plumbing hardware in commercial and residential settings, including faucets, water heaters, utility sinks, ejector pumps, grease interceptors, leak troubleshooting, and use of drain‑clearing machinery.

Additional work experience in skilled trades can substitute one year for the required general experience.

A vocational‑technical school certificate majoring in a skilled trade may substitute one year of required experience.

U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in utility repair or construction/engineering specialties may substitute one year of required experience.

Selective Qualifications:

Service and repair of plumbing hardware in commercial and residential settings, including faucets, water heaters, utility sinks, ejector pumps, grease interceptors, leak troubleshooting, and use of drain‑clearing machinery.

Licenses & Certifications

Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator's license (Class C or higher).

Possession of a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required during the probationary period.

Airfield Operators Permit per Maryland Regulation 11.03.01.04 is required before permanent appointment.

Compliance with agency training and certification program requirements for permanent status is required.

Additional Information

Extensive pre‑employment security background check is required as per FAA regulations.

Availability for duty at any time, day or night, including emergency call‑back requirements.

Reliable communication link required for emergency call‑back.

Possibility of hazardous material exposure (asbestos, lead paint, chromium) and requirement for periodic medical testing and training.

Capability to perform high‑structure and cramped‑quarter maintenance work.

Classification as an ‘Essential Employee’ with required policies and procedures.
