WHAT IS THE JOB? The Director of Application Development will be our first internal development leader. To date, all application development has been delivered through trusted external partners. As the organization scales, we are bringing application development leadership and execution in-house while continuing to work closely with our existing contractors as long-term partners and an integral part of the overall development team.
This role is hands‑on and foundational, responsible for designing, building, and supporting internal applications and integrations, while establishing the technical direction, standards, and practices needed to grow an internal development capability over time.
This role reports to the Senior Director of Technology and works closely with business stakeholders to deliver practical, reliable solutions in an environment that includes both legacy systems and new development.
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES?
Own the design, development, and support of internal applications and system integrations
Work hands‑on across the stack, contributing directly to architecture, development, and delivery
Partner with business stakeholders to understand needs, clarify requirements, and help influence the application roadmap
Make pragmatic build vs. buy recommendations based on cost, scalability, risk, and long‑term maintainability
Assess existing solutions built by contractors and improve, refactor, or extend them as needed
Work as part of a blended development team, collaborating closely with existing contractors who will continue to play a key role in delivery and in supporting the success of this role
Establish development standards, tooling, and best practices, including CI/CD, code quality, and documentation
Bring structure and clarity to ambiguous or evolving problem spaces
Plan and execute the gradual build‑out of an internal development team as the organization grows
Use AI as a tool to amplify your abilities, enhance productivity, and problem solving but not as a replacement for skill, judgement, or ownership
Close collaboration with technology leadership, business partners, and contractors
High visibility role with meaningful impact from day one
WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL SKILLS?
Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of work experience
Five or more years of relevant work experience in similar roles.
Excellent verbal communication, written and documentation skills to document procedures and processes.
Desire to provide exceptional customer service and satisfaction.
Reflects our core values of hopeful, helpful, hardworking, humble, nimble, hospitable and honest.
