Your Role and Responsibilities:
At Zoom, we are creating the next generation of enterprise AI systems aimed at enhancing intelligent search and retrieval capabilities. As an AI Engineer / Machine Learning Engineer Intern, your work will directly impact real users as you engage in projects related to agentic retrieval and Enterprise RAG systems. This position lies at the intersection of large language models, retrieval systems, and engineering for production. You will help design, implement, and optimize pipelines that effectively retrieve, reason about, and act on enterprise knowledge, ensuring high accuracy, low latency, and reliability.

Agentic Retrieval and RAG Systems:
Design and implement retrieval pipelines that support multi-step reasoning, retrieval processes, and tool or function calls. Boost the performance of Enterprise RAG systems by enhancing latency, throughput, and cost efficiency. Integrate these workflows with unified retrieval layers and enterprise data sources.
Retrieval Quality and Efficiency:
Optimize retrieval strategies to minimize redundant system calls and context bloat. Implement content compression and filtering techniques to maintain answer quality while improving reasoning efficiency. Analyze system traces to identify inefficiencies and recurring failure patterns.
Production-Grade Engineering:
Create scalable and maintainable ML and retrieval components suitable for production environments. Add metrics, logging, and evaluation methods to track system performance and product impact. Work collaboratively with engineers and researchers to transition prototypes into reliable, operational services.
Qualifications We Seek: Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field. Proficient in Python programming and familiar with production ML or backend systems. Strong foundation in information retrieval, NLP, or machine learning principles. Experience or coursework related to LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, or agent-based systems. Ability to critically assess system trade-offs regarding accuracy, latency, and cost. Preferred Skills: Hands-on experience with LLM APIs, prompt engineering, or model fine-tuning. Familiarity with search systems, vector databases, or ranking pipelines. Exposure to agentic workflows, tool function calling, or multi-step reasoning systems. Experience working with real datasets and evaluating model/system performance. A genuine interest in developing AI systems with tangible product impact rather than mere research prototypes.
