Serves as the senior Environmental Protection Specialist within assigned areas and supports DLA Disposition Services Field Activities disposing of hazardous materials/waste. Ensures and documents the environmental compliance of DLA Disposition Services field activities by conducting thorough inspections and audits of hazardous waste disposal contractors, treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs), and hazardous property sales customers. Evaluates the efficiency of field activities through statistical analysis, quality assurance inspections, and reviews of automated information systems reports, briefing top management on findings and significant data trends. Prepares and presents detailed reports and briefings on program status, compliance audits, and significant data trends to senior leadership and responds to complex inquiries. Develops and implements new and revised environmental policies and procedures, advises on their implementation, and evaluates requests for deviation from standard operating procedures. Maintains a strong liaison with military services and other federal agencies to exchange disposal information, coordinate new programs, and represent DLA Disposition Services at meetings and forums. To qualify for an Environmental Protection Specialist, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Understanding of federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations (TSCA, RCRA, DoT, CERCLA), hazardous waste management practices, disposal technologies, and emerging environmental technological advancements. Handling, storage, shipment, reutilization, transfer, donation, sales, recycling, and disposal of hazardous property including familiarity with related inventory systems Identifying process improvement areas, analyze data, troubleshoot hazardous property inventory system issues, develop and present recommendations, and evaluate deviations from standard operating procedures. Communication skills to develop policies and procedures, present briefings, respond to inquiries, coordinate with various stakeholders (field activities, DLA, DoW, federal agencies, private sector), and lead meetings. Assessing environmental compliance status of facilities, coordinating audit results, and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements within the context of hazardous waste disposal and management. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
