The Assistant Editor is responsible for overseeing and preparing syndicate features for distribution to multiple markets (online and print), maintaining good relations with feature creators and assisting in marketing efforts on their behalf.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Read, edit and fact-check comic, text and puzzle features to correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition and content
- Work with creators on developing and maintaining editorial quality of their features
- Deliver files for print and online publication
- Work with other members of editorial staff to ensure editorial process is efficient, meets deadlines and is of a high quality
- Coordinate the reproduction of photo/illustrative art that accompanies features
- Assist marketing in developing, writing and/or editing press releases and advertising materials, including AMS and AMU websites and social media
- Field editorial questions and concerns of clients, as well as inquiries from the general public
- Manage production and editing schedules
- Become familiar with the flow of content and the needs and responsibilities of associates and partners at each stage of production, from content ingestion to distribution to clients and the public
- Effective balancing of collaborative and independent responsibilities in a hybrid work environment, with a mixture of in-office and remote duties
- Participate from time to time in acquisition of new features
- Strong language skills and broad education, including interest in a wide range of subjects and knowledge of current events
- Good organizational ability, attention to details and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work on deadline and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Sound interpersonal communication skills
- Competence with digital word processing, communications, use of online collaborative platforms, internet research and social media
- Four-year college degree - English or Journalism degree preferred, or equivalent experience in lieu of a degree
- Previous work or educational experience working as an editor
- Familiarity with AP Style
- Proficiency in PC or Macintosh operating systems
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Teams
- Familiarity with internet research, digital delivery methods and social media
- Basic Photoshop and InDesign skills a plus
- Four-year college degree English or Journalism degree preferred, or equivalent experience in lieu of a degree
- Previous work or educational experience working as an editor
- Familiarity with AP Style
