Opportunity Information

The Program Director (PD) directs all operations of the Sutter Health Internal Medicine Residency Program at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and clinical patient care provided by residents and faculty. The PD develops and leads strategic plans for high‑quality resident recruitment, training, and retention, and ensures a superb training experience that meets ABIM, ACGME, and Sutter Health institutional standards. This is a full‑time 1.0 FTE position with 0.7 dedicated to administration and 0.3 to clinical work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Leadership

  • Plans, organizes, leads, and develops program strategies, goals, and operations in compliance with ABIM, ACP, ACGME, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory standards.
  • Supervises faculty, residents, and administrative staff in recruitment, performance evaluation, compensation, disciplinary action, and development.
  • Appoints faculty to teaching roles and ensures the quality of education they provide, removing them when standards are not met.
  • Oversight of resident recruitment, including application review, interview process, and submission of rank‑order list to the NRMP.
  • Advocates for all program interests with key stakeholder groups within Sutter Health.
  • Manages all fiscal affairs, including operating budget, foundation and grant support, Medicare GME funding, and program policies on travel and benefits.
  • Builds a positive reputation for the residency program through leadership at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Chair and serves on appropriate committees (e.g., GMEC, CCC, PEC).

Teaching and Mentorship

  • Precepts residents and medical students in inpatient, ICU, and outpatient settings.
  • Serves as a role model for residents.
  • Leads quality improvement and patient safety activities.
  • Oversees the overall curriculum of the residency program.
  • Participates in educational activities across all sites, including morning reports, teaching rounds, didactic conferences, and faculty development.
  • Manages remediation and coaching of struggling residents with advisors and faculty.

Clinical Care

  • Provides direct patient care in outpatient, inpatient, and intensive care settings.
  • Shares in clinic, hospital, and call coverage duties and supervises clinical teams.

Other General Duties

  • Other duties and responsibilities as designated.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of documented educational and administrative experience in medical education.
  • Experience acceptable to the ACGME Internal Medicine Review Committee.
  • Active involvement in clinical patient care.
  • Knowledge of health‑care delivery, administration, legal and ethical issues.
  • Team‑based management, communication, diplomacy, and judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle difficult or confrontational situations calmly and equitably.
  • Effective supervision, delegation, and presentation skills.
  • Analytical ability to interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and regulations.
  • Community outreach and representation of the program’s interests.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Current California medical license.
  • Board certification in Internal Medicine.
  • Appropriate clinical privileges as required.

  • Internal Medicine Residents
  • Core Faculty, in conjunction with Site Medical Director
  • Administrative staff, in conjunction with GME Manager
