Role Description

Executive Director

Delaware County Historical Society

Location: Delaware County, Ohio

Employment Type: Full-time

Salary/Benefits: $65,000-$70,000, benefits to be discussed.

Reports to: Board of Directors

Position Summary

The Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS) seeks an accomplished and highly motivated Executive Director to serve as its chief executive officer. This position provides overall leadership and direction for the organization, with primary responsibility for fundraising, external relations, and long-term financial sustainability. The Executive Director partners closely with the Board of Directors to advance the mission of DCHS while ensuring sound governance, effective operations, and strong community presence.

The successful candidate will be a results-oriented fundraising professional with a demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships, secure financial support, and position the organization for sustained growth.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Development (50%)

  • Lead and execute a comprehensive fundraising and development strategy, including individual major gifts, annual giving, corporate partnerships, sponsorships, and grant funding.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors, funders, and sponsors, with a strong emphasis on relationship-based fundraising.
  • Oversee the donor database to ensure accuracy, compliance, reporting, and effective stewardship practices.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to strengthen board engagement in fundraising efforts.
  • Public Relations & External Affairs (15%)

    • Serve as the primary spokesperson and public representative of DCHS.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, partner organizations, and key stakeholders.
    • Work with communications staff or contractors to promote the mission, programs, and impact of DCHS through strategic outreach and media engagement.

    Leadership, Governance & Finance (25%)

    • Partner with the Board of Directors to implement strategic plans and annual budgets that support both immediate operational needs and long-term organizational sustainability.
    • Assist in establishing and overseeing financial management practices, including operating and event budgets, revenue and expense tracking, donor revenue, sponsorships, and coordination of bookkeeping functions.
    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit governance standards, internal controls, and all applicable laws and regulations.

    Human Resources & Organizational Management (10%)

    • Recruit, supervise, and evaluate staff and contractors.
    • Foster a professional, inclusive, and mission-driven organizational culture.
    • Ensure adherence to HR policies, employment laws, and best practices in employee relations.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, public administration, or related field preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 years in a leadership role, ideally in the nonprofit sector.
    • Proven success in fundraising and strategic planning.
    • Strong leadership, communication, and financial management skills.
    • Strong attention to detail.

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: $60,000.00 – $70,000.00 per year
