Job Announcement: Church Musician (Piano/Organ/Choir Director)

Status: Part-time

Schedule: Weekly Sunday morning worship service and one (1) weekly choir rehearsal.

Location: Roberts Memorial United Methodist Church, Alexandria, VA.

About the Role

Roberts Memorial seeks a gifted, reliable musician/choir director to lead congregational singing, and teach and accompany the choir each week. The ideal candidate is ministry-minded, punctual, and comfortable across hymns/anthems, Gospel and Contemporary Christian music.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide musical leadership for weekly Sunday service (prelude, congregational hymns/praise, responses, offertory, postlude, etc.).
  • Lead and accompany one choir rehearsal per week (typically 60–90 minutes), preparing the choir for weekly Sunday services and special services.
  • Collaborate with Pastor/Worship Coordinator to select music that supports the lectionary/sermon and/or theme and church calendar.
  • Arrange for qualified substitutes and provide music/notes for coverage.
  • Maintain church instruments respectfully (report tuning/maintenance needs).
  • Support special services as often as available (i.e., annual days, funerals, and weddings).

Qualifications

  • Proficiency on piano and/or organ (piano strongly preferred); ability to sight-read, play by ear, and accompaniment skills.
  • Experience accompanying choirs and leading congregational singing.
  • Familiarity with traditional hymns/anthems, Gospel, and Contemporary Christian worship music/songs.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, reliability and punctuality.

Time & Compensation

  • Time commitment is a minimum of 3 hours per week (1.5 hrs. for the Sunday service, and 1.5 hrs. for the weekly rehearsal with the choir).
  • Weekly stipend rate of $483 (for Sunday service and rehearsal with the choir); additional pay for special services as scheduled.
