KQED is looking for a producer to join The Bay podcast! The Bay is KQED’s local news podcast that keeps Bay Area listeners informed and engaged with their communities. It’s “local news to keep you rooted.” Episodes are released three times a week: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. And each story strives to help define what it means to be part of the vast metropolitan region we lovingly call the Bay.
You’ll be joining a fast‑paced, collaborative, multi‑skilled podcast production team invested in local communities, equity and civic issues. Come eager to dive deep into Bay Area politics, culture, life and tensions.
As the show’s producer, your job is to work with the team to make the episodes. You’ll do this by laying out the story in a multitrack session, cutting down two‑way interviews, finding soundbites from previously recorded interviews or archive tape, scoring the episode with music and publishing the episode. You’ll also work with the editor to help conceptualize and frame the episode. Expect to work with the host during interviews or on field reporting trips. And there will be plenty of opportunities to pitch episode ideas.
The right person for this position has a passion for local news and understands how to meet a deadline. They are interested in sound design and storytelling, and can be ready to pitch in on various tasks because they are a team player.
Essential Functions:
Pitch story ideas and potential guests to editor and host
Book and pre‑interview guests
Help conceptualize and frame episodes and interviews with the editor and host
Record, log and edit audio/tape for episodes including selecting soundbites or archive tape from previously recorded interviews
Assemble a mix or structure for a story/episode in a multitrack audio editor
Select music and mix it into an episode
Write and produce content for social media platforms in collaboration with podcast team
Research and report stories for episodes
Produce content from remote or field reporting locations
Produce audio promos for the episodes and show
Help produce live events with podcast team
Review podcast show analytics regularly with editor and producer
Occasionally fill‑in for the host when necessary
The successful candidate will be required to join The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG‑AFTRA).
Knowledge/Experience Required:
One to three years of experience as a producer, reporter, anchor or host for a podcast or radio show
Ability to meet and work under short, daily news deadlines
Experience working in a collaborative production team or workflow
Good news judgment
Ability to cover a range of significant public affairs issues such as government, the economy, race, equity, education, health, legal affairs and the environment
Proficiency or mastery in Adobe Audition (or similar audio editing software program)
Strong audio editing and field recording skills
Strong writing skills
Experience reporting and delivering from the field audio, text, photographs, video and other content
Ability to interview and communicate with a variety of individuals
Knowledge/Experience Desired:
Working knowledge of the 9‑county Bay Area and the Sacramento region.
Experience working in a demographically and racially diverse news environment strongly desired
Proficiency and strong interest in engaging listeners via social media or other digital platforms
Conversational fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic or a language other than English
Experience writing and publishing stories for the web and social media
