Assistant Director – Academic Support Program for Student‑Athletes

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Academic Support Program for Student‑Athletes (ASPSA) serves the academic needs of UNC student‑athletes throughout their collegiate experience, preparing them for the next stage of their lives. The ASPSA reports directly to the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and collaborates with faculty, the Department of Athletics, and the campus community to support student‑athletes in the classroom and on the field.
In addition to the Director/Assistant Provost, the ASPSA staff includes academic counselors, learning specialists, and tutors. Services include tutoring, academic and career advising, support with NCAA eligibility, and coordination of academic honors and awards.
Staff work together to guide and support student‑athletes from recruitment through graduation and beyond, providing coaching, monitoring academic progress, compiling reports to coaches, and preparing Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) reports.
Position Summary The Assistant Director serves as an academic counselor for assigned teams and coordinates all aspects of department‑wide projects or programs. Responsibilities include representing the department with university partners, advising student‑athletes on study skills, time management, and scheduling, and maintaining compliance with NCAA, ACC, and University policies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Relevant post‑baccalaureate degree required. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of relevant experience may be considered.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated effectiveness working collaboratively with staff and colleagues.
Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate student retention and familiarity with student‑athlete academic progress issues.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Strong attention to detail and logistics.
Nightly and weekend work required, all year round.
Travel required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Master’s degree preferred.
Experience working with diverse student populations and at‑risk students.
Experience working with student‑athletes or college students.
Working knowledge of NCAA policies and eligibility.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The Assistant Director will report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training on reporting responsibilities.
