Job Description Summary The Director, R&D PMO is a key operational and people leader responsible for driving Program Manager excellence and PMO operational excellence across all Medication Management Solutions (MMS). This role focuses on building a high‑performing PM organization, elevating delivery practices, and ensuring programs across MMS execute with discipline, transparency, and predictability.

The Director develops next‑generation PM talent, embeds best‑in‑class program management processes, and enables Program Managers to confidently lead complex development programs. This role also supports the Senior Director of PMO on portfolio execution, governance readiness, and cross‑functional alignment activities as needed, ensuring cohesive coordination across MMS.

People Leadership & PM Talent Development

Lead, coach, and mentor Program Managers across MMS to strengthen leadership presence, communication, risk management, and strategic execution.

Conduct regular coaching sessions, provide feedback, and assign stretch opportunities to build capability and succession depth.

Assess PM skill gaps and implement targeted development plans to raise performance and consistency across the PM community.

Foster a culture of accountability, empowerment, and continuous learning.

PMO Operational Excellence

Develop and enhance MMS PMO standards, tools, templates, operating mechanisms, and performance metrics.

Implement best‑practice methodologies for integrated planning, issue/risk management, milestone tracking, and program health scoring.

Drive continuous improvement to increase throughput, predictability, and execution rigor across MMS programs.

Ensure consistent application of GPDS, Quality System, and regulatory requirements.

Program Execution Leadership

Oversee Program Managers in building integrated program plans, risk registers, mitigation strategies, and milestone schedules.

Ensure program governance, phase‑gate readiness, and status reporting are executed consistently and transparently.

Support PMs in managing cross‑functional alignment, anticipating challenges, and driving timely issue resolution.

Cross‑Functional & External Partnership Enablement

Act as a senior liaison with external partners, supporting PMs with joint planning, communication, and risk alignment.

Help PMs navigate complex cross‑functional issues with R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, Marketing, Clinical and Commercial partners.

Strengthen PM capability to influence and collaborate effectively across diverse stakeholders.

Portfolio Coordination & Governance Support

Support the Senior Director of PMO in translating portfolio strategy into operational resource plans, governance rhythms, and PMO priorities.

Partner on prioritization, scenario planning, and resource alignment efforts across the MMS portfolio.

Maintain visibility into program performance to ensure senior leadership receives accurate inputs for decision‑making.

Executive Communication & Decision Support

Ensure Program Managers deliver high‑quality, accurate updates on program health, risks, and financial impacts.

Coach PMs on executive presence, message clarity, and recommendation framing.

Support the Senior Director in aligning portfolio communications, milestone readiness summaries, and governance deliverables.

Culture Building & Leadership Excellence

Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance within the PMO organization.

Champion BD’s values and create a motivating environment where Program Managers feel empowered, supported, and inspired to deliver outstanding results.

Model calm, structured leadership during uncertainty and change, teaching PMs how to approach ambiguity with clarity, discipline, and customer focus.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required

Minimum 10 years of experience with Program and Project Management

8+ years of experience leading complex, multi‑year new product development programs within high‑performing, cross‑functional, matrixed organizations

Medical device industry experience required, including strong familiarity with FDA and other regulated environments

Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills paired with strong business, strategic, and financial acumen

Highly effective cross‑cultural interpersonal skills with excellent oral, written, and executive‑level presentation abilities

Demonstrated leadership excellence, consistently delivering results through inspiration, accountability, mentorship, and support

Ability to balance strategic perspective with detailed execution, and expert at risk assessment, escalation timing, and trade‑off decision‑making

MBA or advanced business/management degree preferred

12+ years of related experience

PMP certification or formal project management training

Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey complex program information clearly across all organizational levels, including executives

Proven ability to lead cross‑functional, cross‑site, and external partner teams within a structured, phase‑gate product development process

Deep expertise in program management tools, methodologies, and governance practices, including integrated planning, milestone management, risk/issue tracking, and performance reporting

Strong people leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop Program Managers into high‑performing, independent leaders

Skilled at facilitating effective team dynamics, setting clear expectations, and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Ability to influence across diverse functions and external partners, driving alignment and accountability without direct authority

Demonstrated success leading complex programs that balance schedule, budget, quality, customer needs, and market expectations

Strong analytical and critical‑thinking abilities; capable of synthesizing diverse data into sound recommendations and bringing clarity to ambiguous situations

Demonstrated ability to assess tradeoffs and guide Program Managers in making balanced decisions

Highly effective at time management, adaptable in fast‑changing environments, and resilient when navigating unexpected challenges

Customer‑centric mindset with a focus on delivering value while maintaining program velocity and quality

Ability to attract, develop, and retain top PM talent, building a strong, cohesive PM community across MMS

Acts as a role model for structured, solution‑oriented leadership, inspiring teams through adversity and reinforcing BD’s values

Salary Range Information $162,500.00 - $292,400.00 USD Annual
