Remote Underwriter (Conventional/Government)

Job Description The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and underwriting residential mortgage loan files to ensure compliance with Conventional and Government loan program guidelines, including FHA, VA, and USDA. This role ensures the origination of high‑quality, investment‑grade loans while meeting regulatory, investor, and company standards.

Key Responsibilities

Underwrite Conventional (FNMA/FHLMC) and Government (FHA, VA, USDA) mortgage loans in accordance with agency guidelines, investor requirements, and internal policies

Review and analyze borrower credit, income, assets, liabilities, and collateral to determine loan eligibility and risk

Interpret and apply investor overlays and agency updates to underwriting decisions

Issue loan approvals, conditions, counteroffers, or denials with clear documentation and rationale

Review appraisal reports, title work, and supporting documentation to ensure compliance and loan salability

Utilize automated underwriting systems (DU, LP, GUS) and manually underwrite files when required

Partner closely with loan officers, processors, closers, and post‑closing teams to resolve conditions and meet turn‑time expectations

Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations including FHA/HUD, VA, FNMA, FHLMC, TRID, RESPA, and other applicable guidelines

Stay current on industry changes, agency updates, and investor guideline revisions

Skills and Requirements

3+ years of residential mortgage underwriting experience

Hands‑on experience underwriting Conventional and Government loan products (FHA is a must)

Experience looking up investor overlays in AllRegs

Experience with Encompass LOS Experience underwriting VA or USDA loans

FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and/or VA SAR certification
