Qualifications
Valid MHSA Coaching Certificate or willing to obtain a certificate is required.
All coaches must have a current First Aid certificate.
A teacher or substitute teacher employed by the Lewistown Public Schools is preferred.
Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable.
Knowledge and background in the assigned sport.
High school diploma or GED and experience working with school age students is required.
Must have current tuberculin test and First Aid certificate.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of people.
Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed instructions in standardized situations.
Core Responsibilities Has thorough knowledge of the athletic policy approved by Lewistown Public Schools and the Board of Trustees and is responsible for its implementation.
Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels.
Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
Responsible for assisting the Athletic Director with scheduling and providing transportation to tournaments and special sport events.
Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
Provides documentation to the Athletic Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
Provides the District's training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
By his/her presence at all practices, games and while traveling, provides assistance and guidance to and safeguards for each participant.
Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when enforcement of discipline is necessary.
Contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
Is accountable for all equipment. Collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing and storing of equipment and submits an annual inventory and current records concerning same.
Recommends budgetary items for the next year in his/her area of the program.
Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices and authorizes who may enter. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
Both at home and away examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility.
Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment. Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
Makes press releases and school announcements.
Instructs team members as to changes in the rules and teaches fundamentals of the sport.
Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering (for both head coach and Athletic Director).
Works within the basic framework and philosophy of that sport.
Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments.
Arrives early enough before practice, contests and meetings to adequately prepare and remains long enough afterwards to help players with problems or to become involved in staff discussions.
Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
Never criticizes, admonishes or argues with any coach/staff member within ears or eyes of players or parents.
Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available.
Attends most of the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
Performs such other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position.
Education and Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and experience working with school age students is required.
Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Heavy lifting and performance of personal care duties may be required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
Personal Characteristics Employees of the Lewistown Public Schools must exhibit acceptable work habits and perform tasks in a professional manner by adhering to the following guidelines: Maintain proper grooming and dress consistent with the type of task being performed; be regular in attendance and punctual for work; initiate tasks in a self-directed manner and perform work with a minimum of supervision; organize work and manage time to achieve efficiency and high quality of work; perform tasks neatly and accurately in accordance with desired quality and quantity; provide positive feedback to supervisor(s) for implementing ideas which will make the work assigned more effective and efficient; maintain self control and a friendly, outgoing disposition; and maintain confidentiality of related work matters as applicable.
Drug‑Free Workplace Screening tests for alcohol and illegal drug use may be required before hiring and during employment with the Lewistown Public Schools. Employees must submit to a fingerprint criminal background check. Any appointment will be contingent upon the results of the criminal background report received from the Department of Justice, which must be acceptable to the Board of Trustees, in its sole discretion.
Evaluation Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
