Principal Platform Architect
to lead the design and enhancement of our Internal Developer Portal and Developer Experience ecosystem. This role is critical in building user-friendly, self-service workflows that empower development teams to efficiently onboard, deploy, and manage software within secure environments. In this role, you will bridge the gap between product, platform, and users, translating developer needs into practical platform capabilities. A strong foundation in frontend engineering, complemented by solid backend and cloud-native platform knowledge, is essential. Your contributions will influence how engineers interact with the platform, defining the onboarding processes, automation, and daily workflows across our large engineering teams. Success will be measured through developer adoption, efficiency, and overall satisfaction, as you transform infrastructure into a product that developers love to use. Key Responsibilities: Architect and implement an Internal Developer Portal (IDP) Design user-focused workflows for onboarding, resource provisioning, and lifecycle management Develop frontend experiences using modern web frameworks (React/TypeScript) Implement backend services and APIs that support the portal (Python/FastAPI) Integrate various platform systems (Kubernetes, CI/CD, identity management, secrets management, cost services, and infrastructure automation) Collaborate with platform teams to turn infrastructure capabilities into self-service products Enhance usability, adoption, and overall developer satisfaction across the platform Define and evolve developer experience standards and best practices Gather feedback from engineering teams to drive product improvements Create documentation and enablement materials Effectively communicate technical concepts to engineers and leadership Required Qualifications: BS/BA Degree in STEM (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or Physics) with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience Experience with Windows and Linux operating systems (RHEL 8+ preferred) Proficiency in one or more programming languages (Python, Java, TypeScript, Golang, Rust, Shell) Familiarity with frameworks such as React/Next.js, Flask, Spring Boot, Svelte Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Ansible) Understanding data formats including JSON, XML, YAML, SQL Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or similar on-prem/self-hosted infrastructure) Proficiency in containerization tools (Docker, Podman) Knowledge of orchestration environments (Kubernetes, Rancher) Familiarity with databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB) Experience with product tooling (Jira / Atlassian ecosystem) Knowledge of observability platforms Exposure to generative AI developer tooling Preferred Qualifications: Experience in building or supporting Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) Proven track record of improving developer workflows and platform usability Background in DoD, Intelligence, or Space environments Experience in scaled agile practices Leadership in platform or product initiatives Understanding of Modern DevSecOps practices Knowledge of software testing methodologies Experience with RESTful APIs and distributed architecture design Familiarity with Secure system design principles Experience creating technical documentation Ability to comprehend business, product, and engineering contexts simultaneously Expertise in researching, prototyping, and recommending platform strategy Experience in defining engineering standards and processes What We Offer: At RTX we value safety, trust, respect, accountability, collaboration, and innovation as we create a safer, more connected world.
