Purpose The Legal Advocacy Manager / Supervising Legal Advocate provides day-to-day supervision of The Retreat's Legal Advocacy team and serves as the primary operational leader for frontline advocacy services. This role bridges the gap between the Legal Director (or Executive Director) and the advocacy team, managing caseloads, coaching advocates, ensuring funder compliance, and maintaining the strong community relationships that make The Retreat's legal services effective. This is a hands‑on role: the Supervising Legal Advocate carries a direct caseload while leading the team.

Specific Responsibilities

Manage the advocacy department staff and client assignments.

Handles a caseload of advocacy cases.

Runs The Retreat's pilot criminalized survivor project in Suffolk County women's jails with advocate and executive director support.

Oversee quality assurance activities pertinent to the Advocacy services, including outcome measurements.

Ensure programmatic adherence to Federal, State, and Local funder standards, guidelines and mandates.

Supervise and complete monthly, quarterly and final report processing for the various funders for the department. Design, implement, standardize, and streamline reporting mechanisms to facilitate accurate data collection, reporting, and compilation of related data.

Review staff activities regularly to make recommendations for department needs.

Ensure goals and objectives of funded programs are met. Responsible for supporting the hiring, engagement, employment, termination, and any necessary reduction in staff force relative to advocacy.

Ensure ongoing interdepartmental integration of programs, services, development, policy, and advocacy.

Ensure that the program and services continue to maintain a strong community role. This includes sitting on committees within the Long Island region, and providing technical assistance to them when appropriate.

Work with other departments to maintain a strong presence in the community and expand agency linkages with key contacts throughout Long Island.

Attend public hearings, community meetings, forums, etc.

Participate in community outreach.

Maintain relationships with Police Departments, Attorneys, Courts, Government Officials, and other community members.

Participate in any media or educational programs where the experience of this position is needed.

Attend appropriate workshops, meetings, and site visits.

Meet with representatives of funding sources as needed.

Meet regularly with the Staff Attorney/Executive Director/Legal Director.

Advice and update on departmental objectives, needs, accomplishments, and problems.

Advised on areas of programmatic expertise.

As a member of the agency's management team, participate in program development, assessment, and long‑range planning.

Participate in agency fundraising and outreach initiatives and serve as a leader for department staff.

Other duties as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP Report to the Staff Attorney and Executive Director/ (Eventually Legal Director)

Qualifications

Bi‑Lingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.

BA degree. At least three years of experience with DV/trauma issues, crisis intervention, experience working with criminalized survivors preferred.

2-3 years of supervisory experience preferred.

Candidates with lived experience navigating the family or criminal court system, personally or through a family member, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Ability to make decisions under high stress conditions.

Good oral and written communication skills.

Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Working Conditions

Sits, stands, stoops, squats, walks, and moves intermittently during work hours.

May lift, push, or pull 10-20 pounds occasionally.

Salary: $62000 - $73000 per year
