Purpose Write, maintain, and prepare technical documents for high frequency active sonar systems deployed for the U.S. Navy. Responsible for researching, writing, and editing technical reports, manuals, operating procedures, and other materials. Determines format, supporting graphics, photography, and videography for technical publications. Consults with technical content specialists for accuracy. Creates, updates, and revises current inventory of publications and other training materials.
Responsibilities
Write and maintain HTML & PDF user guides, maintenance manuals, and troubleshooting materials to support system operations and data analysis.
Compile and publish client-level documentation, such as support plans, employment guides, and system description documents.
Develop source material in support of Navy training needs.
Prepare reports of test event details and performance results.
Participate in the testing and verification of sonar components as needed — both in an office and in fielded locations — and prepare reports of results.
Participate in peer editing and publishing processes.
May capture and edit still photos and video artifacts.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in English, technical writing, communications, or similar field.
Three years of professional or technical writing/editing experience.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with writing/publishing documentation for government/defense customers.
Knowledge of authoring tools such as MadCap Flare, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.
Experience writing single-sourced documentation for PDF and HTML outputs.
Understanding or familiarity with Linux, wikis, Markdown, HTML, CSS, CAD, and revision control tools.
Demonstrated knowledge or ability to produce software, hardware, or technical documentation.
Experience writing hardware assembly, maintenance, and/or operations content.
Experience writing user guides and/or operating procedures.
Experience creating, maintaining, or adhering to an internal style guide.
Demonstrated knowledge or ability to express and present key principles.
Strong organizational skills and focus.
Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
Able to work under pressure and accept supervision.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with peers, clients, and management.
Eligibility for immediate access to classified information.
