
Vice President of Underwriting

Job Description:
A specialized property and casualty insurance company is seeking a Vice President, Underwriting. The VP of UW will lead the underwriting strategy, make key risk decisions, and guide portfolio performance, while building strong partnerships with agents, brokers and internal teams. This strategic leader will develop and execute business plans, monitor outcomes, and champion innovation and operational excellence. In addition, the VP of UW will inspire and grow a high-performing underwriting team through coaching, mentoring and strategic leadership, ensuring the team’s work directly supports the organization’s long-term goals and impact. This is a retained search.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership and Business Planning
- Develop and execute long- and short-term underwriting strategies, create business plans, monitor portfolio performance and drive profitable growth aligned with organizational objectives.
Underwriting Oversight and Risk Management
- Provide guidance on risk selection, pricing and portfolio mix. Manage referrals, and ensure underwriting aligns with company guidelines and financial targets.
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, coach and develop the underwriting team. Manage staffing, performance, engagement, training and operational support to maintain high performance.
Stakeholder and Distribution Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with agents, brokers, internal business partners and corporate underwriting to support sales, collaboration and profitability.
Industry Expertise and Innovation
- Maintain awareness of trends, participate in industry forums, drive innovation, challenge the status quo, and implement operational and underwriting excellence initiatives.
Requirements:
15+ years of experience in property and casualty underwriting.
Strong knowledge of underwriting products (property and general liability), portfolio management and industry trends.
8+ years of experience leading and managing teams.
Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree (preferred).
Professional designations such as CPCU, ARM or other industry certifications (preferred).
