Position Overview
YMCA Camp Cullen stands as a premier residential camp destination committed to enriching the lives of youth, families, schools, and various organizations through its comprehensive offerings of summer camp adventures, conferences, retreats, and outdoor educational programs. Role Summary The Outdoor Education & Retreats Director oversees camp operations that include conferences, weekend retreats, and outdoor education. Develops, adapts, organizes, and implements high‑quality programming focused on serving youth and families as well as outside community organizations.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, organize, and implement high‑quality programming focused on serving youth and families.
Supervise part‑time and full‑time non‑exempt staff, including interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, performance appraisals, and ensuring compliance with all staff certifications.
Ensure staff use program supplies appropriately and care for supplies to extend useful life.
Maintain compliance with safety and training requirements, including completion of compliance and safety training, CPR, First Aid and AED certifications within 30 days of hire.
Work with diverse populations, maintaining a positive, patient, sensitive, and non‑judgmental environment for children and families.
Address complaints, resolve problems, and perform other supervisory duties per the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
Two to three years of related experience, preferably in a YMCA resident camp or other recreational camp.
Excellent customer service skills and ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
Experience supervising part‑time and seasonal staff (full‑time staff experience is a plus).
Desire to work with children and families and the ability to relate to them in a positive, patient, sensitive and non‑judgmental manner.
Minimum age requirement of 21 years old.
Preference for knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.
Strong communication skills (written and oral) with both children and adults.
Additional Skills and Requirements
Computer literacy: proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access; basic PC troubleshooting.
Mathematical skills: basic arithmetic, percentages, graph interpretation.
Reasoning ability: apply common sense to follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
Physical demands: stand, walk, sit, talk, occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Ability to read, interpret, and write safety rules, operating instructions, and routine reports.
Work Conditions Flexible with scheduling and availability to work operational hours of the YMCA and sites, which may include day, evenings, and weekends. The work environment is typically moderate in noise level and primarily outdoors. Travel is mainly local between assigned centers during the business day, though some out‑of‑area and overnight travel may be expected.
