Substation Structural Drafter

Power & Energy Civil Structural Substation Team
and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. This position is based in one of these offices and offers an on‑site or hybrid work arrangement; remote work is not available for this role.
This Opportunity Under general to minimal supervision, provides technical design and CADD support on electrical substation projects, producing designs and specifications for power and energy infrastructure. Tasks may include generating CADD designs for substation structural and civil‑related components, including foundations, steel structures, equipment supports, and layouts, on assigned projects of basic complexity.
Your Impact
Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, structural concepts, vendor drawings, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, rough sketches, diagrams, and written or verbal specifications to support substation structural drafting and design activities.
Under general supervision, use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to assist with basic substation structural design details and prepare drawings which require a high degree of precision.
Provide basic technical design assistance that accounts for proper illustration, fit, form, and function for substation foundations, steel structures, and equipment supports, while ensuring designs comply with applicable design standards and specifications.
Assist with verifying drawing accuracy, dimensions, material quantities, design revisions, change orders, and interpretation of contract plans and specifications, escalating technical issues as appropriate.
Work with cross‑functional teams, including structural, electrical, and civil disciplines, in executing substation project work.
Assure plans adhere to applicable city, state, and federal regulations, as well as client and industry standards.
Prepare multiple versions of substation structural designs for review by engineers.
Ensure the specification of dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned substation projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
Work collaboratively with the engineer‑in‑charge and other technical professionals on assigned project phases, segments, checks, and tasks.
Complete training on assigned drafting and design support tasks.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are Required Qualifications
High School Diploma.
Minimum of 3 years of relevant post education experience with prior substation structural or utility infrastructure drafting experience.
Demonstrated experience supporting substation structural drafting scope on utility or power infrastructure projects.
Familiar with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
Familiar with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
Familiarity with computer‑aided drafting software, such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
Capable of producing Steel and Foundation Plans, section and elevation views, assembling shop drawings, and preparing structural bills of materials.
Excellent research and evaluation skills with analytical mindset.
Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to technical and non‑technical audiences.
Capable self‑leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
Authorization to work in the United States without the need for employer‑sponsored visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, for coordination with project teams, clients, and documentation requirements.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in closely related discipline is preferred.
Prior experience supporting substation, utility, or industrial infrastructure projects.
Exposure to structural or civil drafting related to foundations, steel, or equipment supports.
