Director, SEC Reporting & Technical Accounting
Collectors Universe Inc., Santa Ana, CA, United States
We’re looking for a Director, Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting to build and lead the financial reporting and technical accounting function for Collectors. This is a foundational hire—you’ll establish the processes, infrastructure, and rigor needed to produce institutional-quality financial reporting across a complex, multi-entity organization with diverse revenue streams, international operations, and a rapidly evolving business model. You’ll serve as the company’s go-to expert on U.S. GAAP technical matters, drive accounting policy development, and ensure our external reporting meets the highest standards of accuracy, completeness, and transparency. This role is ideal for someone who has operated in a public-company reporting environment and wants to bring that level of discipline to a high-growth company at an exciting inflection point.* Build and own the external financial reporting process from the ground up; establish the frameworks, templates, checklists, and review procedures to produce investor-grade consolidated financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.* Prepare and review quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements, management reporting packages, and supporting schedules for leadership, the Board of Directors, equity sponsors, and lenders.* Design and maintain a robust disclosure checklist and financial statement review process; ensure completeness and accuracy of all footnotes, disclosures, and supplemental information.* Lead the preparation of any required external filings and regulatory reports; build the infrastructure and muscle to support more rigorous reporting requirements as the company evolves.* Partner with FP&A on earnings-quality analytics, flux analysis, and variance commentary that accompanies financial reporting packages.* Serve as the company’s subject-matter expert on U.S. GAAP; provide authoritative guidance on complex and non-routine accounting matters including revenue recognition (ASC 606), business combinations (ASC 805), leases (ASC 842), stock-based compensation (ASC 718), foreign currency (ASC 830), and impairment (ASC 350/360).* Research, document, and communicate the accounting implications of new transactions, business initiatives, partnerships, and commercial arrangements across all Collectors subsidiaries.* Monitor the FASB, SEC, and other standard-setting bodies for new and emerging pronouncements; assess the impact on Collectors’ financial statements and lead implementation of new standards.* Develop and maintain the company’s accounting policy manual; ensure policies are current, comprehensive, and consistently applied across all entities and geographies.* Prepare technical accounting memoranda (white papers) to document conclusions on significant accounting positions; maintain a well-organized library of technical positions for audit support and institutional knowledge.* Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors on financial reporting and technical accounting matters; lead the audit and quarterly review process from planning through completion.* Prepare and review audit deliverables including financial statements, supporting schedules, management representation letters, and responses to auditor inquiries.* Coordinate with Tax, Treasury, and Legal on disclosures, contingencies, and other matters that impact the financial statements.* Support equity sponsor and lender reporting requirements, including covenant compliance reporting and ad hoc information requests.* Partner with the Corporate Controller and Internal Audit to design and implement financial reporting controls that meet public-company standards, including management review controls, disclosure controls, and financial statement close procedures.* Ensure the financial reporting process is fully documented with appropriate segregation of duties, evidence of review, and management sign-off at each stage.* Support SOX-readiness initiatives by establishing control frameworks over financial reporting, technical accounting conclusions, and disclosure processes.* Manage and develop the Lead, Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting; set clear expectations, provide coaching, and create opportunities for professional growth.* Build the function over time as the company’s reporting requirements grow; develop a staffing roadmap and recruit additional team members as needed.* Foster a culture of intellectual curiosity, technical excellence, and collaboration within the team and across the broader Finance organization.* 12+ years of progressive accounting experience with deep expertise in financial reporting and technical accounting; combination of public accounting (audit) and corporate financial reporting experience strongly preferred.* Active CPA required.* Extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP across a broad range of topics, with particular depth in revenue recognition (ASC 606), business combinations, leases, stock-based compensation, and consolidation.* Prior experience in a public-company financial reporting or SEC reporting environment (10-K, 10-Q, proxy, earnings releases) required; experience building or upleveling a financial reporting function at a high-growth company is highly valued.* Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and document complex accounting positions with clear, well-reasoned technical memoranda.* Strong working knowledge of financial reporting controls, disclosure requirements, and SOX frameworks.* Experience managing external audit relationships and coordinating the quarterly review and annual audit process.* Hands-on experience with NetSuite or comparable enterprise ERP systems; familiarity with financial reporting tools (e.g., Workiva/Wdesk) is a plus.* Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to distill complex technical accounting concepts into clear guidance for non-technical stakeholders and senior leadership.* Detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple workstreams and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.* Big 4 public accounting experience strongly preferred.* Experience with M&A accounting (purchase price allocation, integration) is a strong plus.* Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required;
