JR101638The Chief Strategy and Advancement Officer (CSAO) serves as a key member of the executive leadership team of the Diaspora Human Genomics Institute (DHGI) — a nonprofit corporation established by Meharry Medical College dedicated to advancing equitable genomic discovery, education, and community trust across the global African diaspora.
Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the CSAO provides strategic leadership for all external partnerships, institutional strategy, and advancement. This executive role builds the connective tissue between institutions of science and policy and the communities historically excluded from both—translating research into relationships of respect, reciprocity, and tangible benefit and expanding access to genomics for faculty and students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. It requires a leader with a proven record of building trust-based collaborations between communities, educators, institutions, and funders—someone who can connect science, equity, and strategy to build durable, investable systems of inclusion and impact.**Essential Functions (Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities):****1. Executive Leadership & Institutional Strategy*** Serve as a member of the DHGI Executive Leadership Team, contributing to institute-wide strategy, operations, advancement, and governance.* Partner with the President & CEO to define long-term strategic goals, performance metrics, and growth priorities.* Support alignment between DHGI and Meharry Medical College leadership on advancement
and institutional initiatives.* Lead cross-functional coordination across programs, communications, operations, and finance.**2. Strategic Partnerships & Collaboration*** Design and steward partnerships with universities, HBCUs, HBMS, philanthropic organizations, private sector enterprises, and research institutions.* Serve as DHGI’s senior liaison to external partners, including federal agencies, foundations, and the T4C consortium members.* Negotiate and manage inter-institutional agreements (MOUs, contracts, cooperative agreements) that ensure transparency, accountability, and shared benefit.* Represent DHGI and Together for CHANGE (T4C) in national and international forums, advancing community engagement and collaboration.**3.** **Advancement & Institutional Growth*** Partner with the President & CEO to design and implement fundraising strategies that expand DHGI’s support base.* Partner with the Meharry Medical College Office of Institutional Advancement* Cultivate and steward relationships with donors, foundations, and corporate partners to secure multi-year investments aligned with DHGI’s mission and priorities.* Collaborate with communications and program teams to develop compelling cases for support, impact reports, and donor engagement materials.* Identify new opportunities for strategic investment, grants, and partnerships that advance DHGI’s long-term sustainability and global impact.**4. Together for CHANGE (T4C) Program Leadership*** Provide executive DHGI leadership for the Together for CHANGE initiative* Support the development of the T4C education and workforce development portfolio, expanding training pipelines and mentorship programs through HBCUs, African Institutions and other minority serving institutions.**5. Community Engagement & Trust Architecture*** Lead DHGI’s global approach to community engagement through listening sessions, advisory councils, and other forums.* Support Meharry in embedding community-centered practices into DHGI priorities and education.**6. Ethical Leadership, Communications, and Data Sovereignty*** Lead the development of policy and ethical frameworks that promote data sovereignty and equitable use of genomic data.* Lead DHGI’s communications strategy, ensuring that narratives about genomics research are transparent, trustworthy, and community-driven.* Serve as a visible spokesperson and advocate for DHGI’s mission to make science more useful, trustworthy, and reflective of the communities it serves.
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:*** Knowledge of financial management, and human resources practices in an academic, government or nonprofit setting.* Ability to interpret and apply institutional policies, sponsor guidelines, and compliance requirements.* Skilled in using Microsoft Office Suite.* Excellent organizational and project management skills.* Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and community partners.* High level of discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive or confidential matters.**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Preferred:*** Advanced degree in public policy, public health, genetics, or humanities related field.**Education and Experience Required:*** Minimum 10 years of experience in partnerships, equity leadership, or strategic program management at the intersection of research, community engagement, genomics education, and policy.* Proven success leading cross-sector collaborations involving government, academia, philanthropy, and industry.* Deep understanding of government, academic, and community cultures — and the ability to navigate across them with diplomacy and integrity.* Exceptional communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.* Demonstrated ability to lead and participate in diverse teams and initiatives.**Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:**N/A*This job description reflects the general duties and responsibilities necessary to describe the principal functions of the job, as identified, and shall not be considered an exhaustive list of job responsibilities which may be inherent in the job.
