Who we are As the UK’s leading MS charity, the MS Society provides hope, voice and support for everyone affected by multiple sclerosis.
We are here for people living with MS, for their families, friends and carers and for the volunteers, researchers, supporters and healthcare professionals united against MS. We understand what life is like with MS and together we are stronger.
Our vision is a world free from MS. That means fewer people developing the condition and everyone with MS having access to effective treatments, trusted information and support to live well. Our work spans world leading research, high quality services and campaigning for the rights and needs of people with MS.
In December 2024, our Board approved our new organisational strategy for 2025–2029, built on three pillars — stop MS, be heard and live well. It sets out how we will accelerate progress towards our vision.
Transforming the future of MS research We are changing the research world to stop MS. We’ve launched Octopus, our revolutionary multi‑arm, multi‑stage clinical trial that is transforming how treatments for progressive MS are tested. We are investing in fundamental research that deepens our understanding of MS and in research that explores health inequalities, so we can better support marginalised groups. Our aim is to move faster, be bolder and bring real hope to everyone affected by MS.
Championing the voices of people with MS Our community’s voice drives everything we do. Welfare reform threatens to push people with MS into poverty, affecting health outcomes and quality of life. We are working tirelessly to ensure the needs of people with MS stay firmly on the agenda in Westminster, Holyrood, the Senedd and Stormont. When our community speaks, we make sure decision makers listen, empowering people to live well with MS.
We bring together services, information and expertise to help people understand and manage their MS. We support physical, emotional and financial well‑being and strengthen community connections so people with MS feel informed, understood and supported. No one should have to face MS alone.
Evolving how we work to meet ambitious goals We are a complex organisation with bold ambitions, and we know we must evolve to achieve them. We are improving how we use data, expanding our services to reach more of the MS community and developing stronger relationships with supporters, donors and volunteers. We are investing in our people and building a culture that is respectful, inclusive and collaborative.
Governance that supports bold decisions Our ambitions require us to take bold, calculated risks, supported by robust governance. The Board of Trustees has reviewed and strengthened the structure and remit of its expert committees to ensure it can provide the scrutiny, challenge and strategic leadership needed for the years ahead.
We fund world leading research, campaign for everyone’s rights and bring together a community that runs, walks, cares, talks, researches, writes and advocates. Together, we are strong enough to stop MS. The task before us is huge, but our MS community is a unique and powerful force for change. Join us and together we will create a future free from MS.
About the role We are seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees at a pivotal moment in the organisation’s development. This is a key non‑executive role for someone who shares our vision and wants to use their financial expertise to help shape the future of the MS Society.
The Treasurer is a full Trustee with additional responsibility for ensuring that the organisation’s financial integrity remains strong. As part of the Board, you will help set our strategic direction, support and challenge the executive group, agree our annual plan and budget and oversee performance, risk and compliance. Your insight will influence decisions that directly affect the lives of thousands of people living with MS across the UK.
You will help ensure that our financial strategy enables us to achieve our ambitious goals, that our audit and risk frameworks are robust and that our financial policies support sound governance. You will also play a key leadership role within our committee structure, including serving as Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and contributing to the Strategic Implementation and Finance Committee.
The role requires a time commitment of
around two days per month , including Board meetings, committee work, preparation and correspondence. Most committee meetings take place online, with Board meetings and strategy days held in London. We welcome applicants from across the UK and will arrange travel and accommodation and reimburse all reasonable expenses.
You will receive a comprehensive induction, regular learning and development opportunities, access to our Board reading room and ongoing guidance from our Chair, Governance Team and a dedicated Trustee buddy. When you join us, you will find a skilled, committed and values driven Board, many of whom have deep personal experience of MS.
This is a voluntary and unpaid role, but the impact you will make is significant and lasting.
Who we are looking for We are looking for a Treasurer who brings significant financial expertise gained at a strategic level, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of people affected by MS. We welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences and we particularly value the richness that comes from lived experience of MS.
Many of our Trustees have a personal connection to MS — either through direct lived experience, or through a family member, friend, colleague or loved one. For some, this personal motivation is an important and meaningful reason they choose to serve on our Board. While this connection is not essential, we fully recognise the emotional resonance it can have and the insight it can bring. What matters most is that our Trustees share a deep alignment with our mission and purpose, and a commitment to ensuring that the voices and needs of people with MS shape everything we do.
We are also looking for someone who can give the role the time and attention it requires. The Treasurer position is a significant commitment of around two days per month and it is important that candidates feel confident they can contribute actively, prepare thoroughly and engage meaningfully in Board and committee discussions.
To succeed in this role, you will need a professional qualification in accounting, tax or investment management, with significant senior experience in one of these areas. You will be adept at analysing complex information, understanding implications beyond the financial detail and communicating your insights clearly and constructively. Experience in risk management, finance, fundraising, investment matters or audit processes would be beneficial, but not essential. Most importantly, you will bring an ability to offer thoughtful challenge and provide steady, informed leadership in financial decision making.
Some individuals are legally disqualified from serving as a Trustee, for example, anyone who is an undischarged bankrupt or who has an unspent conviction involving deception or dishonesty. If appointed, you will be asked to complete an annual Trustee Disqualification Undertaking. You will also need to consent to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) or equivalent check as part of the application process.
Accessibility We’re committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of everyone who uses our services, and we come into contact with.
This is regardless of gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief, pregnancy or gender reassignment.
We recognise our particular responsibility to make sure vulnerable adults and children are protected.
We have measures in place to protect everyone we come into contact with from abuse and maltreatment of all kinds.
We understand that members of the community have different access needs and we have made some modifications to the way we do business to accommodate people from diverse communities and abilities.
We offer the following amenities:
Step‑free access to the building, all key meeting rooms and bathrooms, and an accessible workstation.
Accessibility dogs are welcome.
Papers and materials can be presented in different formats.
Working patterns and locations can be adjusted.
Workplace initiatives include:
Disability committed L1 (working towards disability confident L2).
Race Equality Matters membership.
Carers Confident membership and working towards L1 accreditation.
Menopause friendly membership (Henpicked) and working towards accreditation.
We’re a Disability Confident Employer, and we’re committed to promoting equality and diversity.
You can ask for reasonable adjustments as part of both our recruitment and new starter onboarding processes.
