
UI/UX Designer - Analytics

Job Description
A global law firm with nearly 1,400 lawyers and more than 3,000 employees across 19 offices in the United States, Europe, and Asia is looking to build out a data lake to encompass both internal and external data. The role is a long-term contract with potential to hire down the line, so the candidate must be commutable to one of their office locations: Boston MA, NYC, Palo Alto CA, Chicago IL, Denver CO, LA, Miami FL, Reston VA, San Diego CA, San Francisco CA, Santa Monica CA, Seattle WA, or Washington DC. The role will require 4-8 days onsite per month. Key Responsibilities Experience Design for Analytics (Power BI + Databricks Apps + Genie)
Design intuitive, role‑aware user interfaces for analytics surfaces: Power BI thin reports, Databricks Apps (including the FinIQ replacement application)
Genie/Copilot‑enhanced experiences
Create narrative‑first layouts that reduce dependence on raw tables and exports.
Work with the Analytics Platform Delivery Lead to define UX standards for Certified dashboards, including layout, navigation, filters, interactions, and accessibility.
Analytics Design System Ownership
Create and maintain a Cooley Analytics Design System covering: Color palettes, visual hierarchy, typography, Component patterns (cards, KPIs, slicers, narratives, drill paths), Interaction rules and accessibility standards
Define reusable UX patterns for common analytic use cases (client intelligence, matter insights, financial workflows, etc.).
User Research & Journey Mapping
Conduct user interviews, usability testing, and workflow observations.
Build journey maps, personas, and prototypes that reflect real attorney and business‑team needs.
Translate findings into validated design recommendations that integrate seamlessly with governed semantics.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Partner closely with:
Analytics Engineers and BI Developers
Gold Data Modelers
Databricks App Developers
Data Governance and Security
Ensure UX designs conform to RLS/CLS, governed semantics, and certified metric definitions.
Execution Quality & Feedback Loop
Produce developer‑ready UI specifications and component guidelines.
Provide UX QA support during development and deployment.
Track UX KPIs including export reduction, workflow completion inside apps, narrative adoption, and satisfaction scores.
Initial 6–9 Month Focus
Deliver Client Analytics Design System v1 for Power BI and Databricks Apps.
Redesign a high‑impact domain with role‑aware, narrative‑first patterns.
Implement UX standards for Certified dashboards and semantic‑layer‑aligned experiences.
Provide UX leadership on the Databricks App FinIQ replacement MVP.
Success Measures (12 Months)
Design System adopted by BI developers, app developers, and analytics engineers.
≥30% reduction in UX inconsistencies across dashboards and apps.
≥40% increase in narrative‑first experience usage vs. table‑centric reporting.
Measurable decrease in unnecessary Excel exports.
High UX satisfaction scores from practice groups and business teams.
Compensation
$50/hr to $57/hr.
Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including location, skills, experience, and education.

Skills and Requirements
5+ years in UI/UX design preferably with at least 2+ years in analytics, BI, or data‑heavy products.
Portfolio demonstrating dashboards, insight workflows, and complex data visualization design.
Strong experience with design tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD).
Understanding of semantic models, grain, KPIs, and the UX impact of data governance.
Experience partnering with developers building applications using Python‑based frameworks (e.g., Streamlit, Dash) or modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React).
Designer is not expected to code the front end but must produce developer‑ready UI specifications. Experience with Databricks Apps or internal tooling frameworks.
Familiarity with AI‑assisted UX patterns (Genie/Copilot/NLQ).
Experience in legal, professional services, or other high‑trust environments.
Understanding of Data Vault → Gold → Semantic modeling implications on UI/UX.
