Position Summary The City of Norton, Virginia is seeking an experienced, community-focused leader to serve as Chief of Police. The Chief of Police provides executive leadership and strategic direction for the Police Department, ensuring the safety and security of residents while fostering strong relationships with the community.
The Chief reports directly to the City Manager and oversees all operations of the Police Department, including patrol, investigations, training, administration, and community outreach.
Key Responsibilities
Provide leadership, policy direction, and operational oversight for all police services.
Develop strategies to enhance community policing and public safety.
Manage departmental budgets, personnel, and resources.
Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Promote transparency, accountability, and community trust.
Coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field or equivalent experience consisting of a minimum
10‑15 years of progressive law enforcement experience , including
5 years in command‑level leadership .
Certification through the
Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) .
Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field.
Completion of executive law enforcement training programs (e.g., FBI National Academy or similar).
Demonstrated experience with community policing initiatives.
Virginia Retirement System (VRS) participation
Health, dental, and vision insurance
Paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays
