Head of Communications

Flex, WorkFromHome, NY, United States

Overview

Flex is a growth-stage, NYC headquartered FinTech company that is creating the best rent payment experience. It’s 2026, and paying rent on time is expensive, inflexible, and difficult. Flex enables users to pay rent throughout the month on a schedule that fits their finances and budget, empowering renters with flexibility over this recurring expense. We are growing our team to advance this mission.

About the role

Flex is entering a pivotal stage of growth where how we tell our story matters as much as the product we build. As the Head of Communications, you will lead the strategy and execution behind Flex’s external narrative, ensuring our mission, product, and impact are clearly understood across media, partners, and the broader fintech ecosystem. You will oversee our PR agency relationship, drive proactive media engagement, and guide the company through high-stakes communications moments with confidence and clarity.

This role requires both strategic thinking and hands-on execution, working closely with executive leadership to shape messaging, prepare spokespeople, and ensure Flex is represented thoughtfully in the public conversation. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-moving environments and is comfortable navigating complex narratives in regulated industries. This role reports to the Chief Marketing Officer and will play a key role in protecting and strengthening Flex’s reputation as we scale.

This is a hybrid position with on-site expectations of 2-3 days per week in our New York, San Francisco, or Salt Lake City headquarters. For candidates outside of the NY/NJ/SF/SLC area, relocation assistance may be available.

What you’ll do

  • Develop and maintain Flex’s core narrative and messaging framework, ensuring consistency across media, partners, and public-facing communications
  • Own and manage the relationship with our PR agency, setting strategy, briefing priorities, and holding them accountable for measurable outcomes
  • Lead proactive media engagement including press outreach, executive profiles, thought leadership placements, and product or company announcements
  • Prepare talking points, provide media training, and coach spokespeople for external engagements
  • Act as the company’s communications lead during sensitive or high-stakes situations, crafting responses and representing Flex with clarity and composure
  • Monitor media coverage and industry narratives related to fintech and consumer finance, identifying opportunities to shape the conversation
  • Build and scale the communications function over time as Flex grows
  • 10+ years of communications experience, with significant time in fintech, financial services, or another highly regulated consumer industry
  • Proven track record managing PR agencies and holding them accountable for strategic outcomes
  • Experience navigating high-stakes or adversarial media environments; comfortable speaking on the record, on camera, and representing the company publicly
  • Ability to translate complex financial products and concepts into clear, human narratives
  • Thrives in fast-moving environments and is comfortable operating both strategically and hands-on when needed

Flex takes a market-based approach to pay, ensuring compensation is commensurate with a candidate's experience and our internal leveling guidelines.

For candidates located in Tier 1 markets (NYC/SF), the base salary pay range for this role is $200,000—$250,000 USD. For all other U.S. locations, Flex uses a geographic pay differential based on a cost of labor index. If you are located outside Tier 1 states, your starting pay will be adjusted to align with the market conditions of your geographic zone. Please speak with your recruiter for additional information regarding the specific range for your location.
