The Spa Director oversees the overall operations of the Spa at Bernardus Lodge & Spa, ensuring exceptional guest experiences aligned with our Forbes Four‑Star standards and luxury wellness philosophy. As a key ambassador of the Bernardus experience, this role leads spa operations including treatments, retail, wellness programming, and team development while maintaining the highest standards of service excellence.

The Spa Director is responsible for leading the spa team, driving revenue through services and retail, maintaining operational excellence, and ensuring the spa remains a premier wellness destination in Carmel Valley.
Duties and Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include establishing and maintaining quality product and service levels while maximizing profits; forecasting and budgeting; selecting, training and developing staff; maintaining inventory control; menu development; community liaison; monitoring budget and maintaining high levels of team member satisfaction.
- Controls the sales and profitability of spa services, treatments, wellness programming, and retail operations.
- Establishes and monitors standards for spa services and guest interactions in accordance with Forbes Four‑Star standards and Bernardus service expectations.
- Establishes and maintains effective revenue management techniques to maximize spa service and retail revenues and reviews and analyzes financial performance.
- Develops, implements, and monitors spa budgets while overseeing financial reporting and operational expenses.
- Assesses staffing requirements and recruits spa professionals when needed.
- Adheres to Forbes Four‑Star standards and Bernardus Lodge & Spa handbook policies.
- Manages staff performance in accordance with established standards and procedures.
- Ensures spa team members have a clear understanding of treatment protocols, wellness offerings, retail products, and guest service expectations.
- Organizes and monitors spa staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage.
- Monitors the overall condition of the spa facility including treatment rooms, locker areas, relaxation spaces, and public areas and ensures deficiencies are corrected promptly.
- Maintains visibility and accessibility to guests, staff, and vendors while fostering open communication across the spa team.
- Ensures guests’ needs are fulfilled and their spa experience exceeds expectations while responding promptly to guest feedback, concerns, or complaints.
- Establishes par levels for spa supplies, equipment, and retail merchandise while maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
- Maintains professional product inventory and controls efficient usage through cost analysis and inventory management systems.
- Collaborates with Sales, Marketing, and other resort departments to promote spa services and wellness offerings.
- Implements marketing initiatives and seasonal spa promotions to drive spa utilization and revenue.
- Ensures compliance with all health, sanitation, and licensing regulations.
- Maintains thorough knowledge of all spa treatments, wellness services, and retail products.
- Prepares accurate and timely operational and financial reports as required.
- Assists spa staff with job functions when necessary to ensure optimum service to all guests.
- Supports safe work habits and a safe working environment at all times.
- Implements procedures to ensure the highest levels of operational excellence and ethics are maintained.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by management.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Hires, trains, supervises, motivates, and develops restaurant, banquets, pool and in‑room dining staff; manages schedules and workflow.
- Provides day‑to‑day guidance and oversight of subordinates; actively works to promote and recognize performance.
- Keeps up to date on overall activities of the team, identifying problem areas and taking corrective actions.
- Provides timely performance evaluations and makes recommendations for pay increases.
- Monitors, updates, and controls timekeeping function for all staff.
- Approve timesheets and process payroll.
Preferred Experience & Skills
- Two to four years of spa management experience or equivalent hospitality leadership experience.
- Knowledge of professional spa services, treatments, and wellness programs.
- Experience managing retail operations and inventory systems.
- Demonstrated proficiency in supervising and motivating team members.
- Commitment to excellence and high service standards.
- Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and financial management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage priorities and workflow.
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to do the following:
- Must be able to walk, stand and sit for hours at a time.

- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Certificates & Licenses
- Valid California Driver License is required.
Grooming & Work Attire
- Business attire is required, such as slacks, blouse/sweater, buttoned shirt, and nice shoes. Suit jacket only suggested on days when assisting with client events.
- Name tag required whenever walking through public spaces at the resort.
- No extreme colors, highlights or hairstyles.
- No facial or tongue piercing.
- Necklace and earrings must be office appropriate.

Work Environment
The work environment at Bernardus Lodge ranges from winter time lows of 20 degrees to summer time highs to 100 + degrees.
