Assistant Farm Manager

This full-time position is accountable for planting, maintaining and harvesting sod. This includes managing workers and facilitating communication with all other managers and divisions. This position assists and reports to the Washington Division Manager.

Responsibilities

Direct, assist & train workers (planting, maintenance & harvest crew) in performing duties necessary to meet deadlines. Including preparing ground for planting, responsible for mowing, irrigating and maintaining a high standard of quality in all sod leaving the farm and maximizing square feet harvested per acre while still maintaining great sod quality.

Facilitate communication with other supervisors, co-workers and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail or in person especially with the following: Other farm managers, office staff (sod harvest coordination), sales staff (quality issues), trucking dispatcher (sod load set up and offloading of freight) and nursery manager (any items that might cross over).

Establish and enforce operating procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety. Coordinate safety training with farm manager and keep abreast of any safety concerns. Report any accidents or injuries to farm manager immediately.

Perform administrative duties (new hire paperwork, time sheets review & approval) and maintain required records (daily sod cut logs, track field ID and quantity harvested).

Perform employee relations duties as needed.

Direct and assist workers in the maintenance and repair of equipment.

Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

Ability to speak Spanish is helpful.

Pass pre-employment drug test.

Enjoy working in non-climate controlled environment.

Be self-motivated, have an ability to learn job responsibilities, perform with minimal supervision and have the ability to understand and execute instructions.

Strong communication skills.

2-3 years of supervisory and farming/landscaping/golf course experience with proven track record.

Chemical applicator’s license is a plus (or ability to obtain within 4 months of hire).
