The New York City Council is seeking a Junior Speech Writer to join its Communications Division. The Junior Speechwriter will work closely with the City Council Speaker, senior staff, members of the Communications Division, staff from the Legislative, Land Use and Finance divisions, as well as other Council Members, to prepare event remarks, speeches, op-eds, and testimony highlighting and promoting City Council priorities and initiatives.
SALARY RANGE:
$75,000 to $90,000
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Draft speeches, op-eds, and long-form remarks that effectively elevate and advance City Council priorities, initiatives, and policy positions.
- Collaborate closely with the Communications Director, Chief Speechwriter, and broader communications team to develop and refine strategic messaging.
- Conduct in-depth research across a wide range of policy areas to inform communications and ensure accuracy.
- Analyze delivered remarks, current news coverage, and press materials to continuously strengthen messaging and narrative alignment.
- Provide additional support and undertake special projects as assigned.
- Demonstrated experience in public relations, journalism, communications, or a related field.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a strong command of tone, voice, and audience engagement.
- Bachelor's degree in English, Creative Writing, Journalism, Communications, or a related discipline preferred, though not required.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and creative thinking skills, with the ability to translate complex policy into accessible language.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with New York City government, political landscape, and diverse communities is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and standard digital research and editing tools.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.
