Job Description:
The Marketing Intern assists the Marketing Department of the State University System Press (University Press of Florida) in spreading the word about books published by the Press to readers everywhere, helping find, grow, and interact with audiences for Press books. The position also performs other clerical duties as assigned.
Excellent written communication skills and organizational abilities are essential. This position is ideal for students who enjoy reading and discussing books, who want to gain experience in the publishing business, and who are interested in exploring book publishing or marketing as a career. The Marketing Intern will gain practical and professional knowledge about the publishing industry and marketing.
Responsibilities
Sales and Publicity Lead Generation: Researches sales and marketing leads and creates mailing lists of relevant retailers, libraries, organizations, and instructors for book promotions.
Creates promotional emails for the Press email marketing program.
Researches publicity contacts and creates media lists of relevant journalists for book pitches.
Sends special pitch emails as assigned.
Copywriting and Proofreading
Writes and proofreads book descriptive copy, press releases, and social media content.
Writes and formats blog posts and webpages using WordPress.
Checks online metadata to ensure correct formatting of book information.
Departmental Support
Assists in processing book reviews received.
Assists in maintaining Press metadata with excerpts from reviews received.
Assists in maintaining Press author events calendar.
Participates in weekly marketing meetings to help generate ideas for promoting Press books.
$15.00 /hr
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
Computer literacy, including working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word and Excel), and social media platforms (Facebook, Bluesky, Instagram, Threads, WordPress, etc.)
Preferred:
2 semester (Fall and Spring) commitment
Appropriate college coursework or relevant experience in a professional setting and/or publishing, especially copyediting and proofreading.
Experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
