Position Information SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION SECTION

POLICE EVIDENCE SPECIALIST II, SR-18

LIMITED TERM APPOINTMENT, BUT MAY BECOME PERMANENT Summary of Duties:

The Police Evidence Specialist II documents the crime scene through photography, diagrams, processing for latent fingerprints, and also searches for, recovers, preserves and marks evidence; assists in conducting tests and analyses within the laboratory and in the field, prepares court exhibits and testifies in court proceedings; and performs other related duties as required. This is an entry level position with the Police Evidence Specialist II becoming progressively more independent in performing duties. Example of Duties:

Assists in the investigation, interpretation and reconstruction of the crime scene through physical or abstract evidence (including such means as blood spatter/stain interpretation and terminal ballistics), using knowledge of methods, policies, procedures and techniques pursuant to the SIS internal training program. Responds to crime scenes to render assistance to investigating Officers in searching for, recovering, preserving and marking physical evidence and chemical substances, materials, liquids and other evidence using prescribed standards, methods and techniques. In response to certain crime scenes, will be required to withstand sustained physical exertion and perform arduous work under adverse conditions and as applicable, while wearing protective safety equipment, such as a respirator. Assists in processing and analyzing a variety of physical and chemical substances, materials, liquids and evidence by conducting forensic field tests such as Hemident® luminol, etc. Prepares and processes the evidence in the laboratory for trace evidence recovery, analyses and storage. Minimum Qualification Requirements Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in the physical, biological, or forensic sciences, and one year of laboratory, research or analytical experience involving the application of scientific principles and procedures in chemistry, biology, physics, forensic sciences, or related fields. License Requirement:

Possession of an appropriate valid Hawaii State driver's license, as required. Knowledge of:

Basic principles of the physical and biological sciences; standard laboratory procedures and equipment.
