Tax Specialist (CPA) for high growth start-up
Stealth Startup, San Francisco, CA, United States
We're looking for a CPA with 4+ years of experience to join a team building AI that automates tax preparation end to end — from document intake and data extraction to return filing.
Our AI agents process K-1s, 1040s, and business returns autonomously: extracting data, validating against tax logic, and exporting directly into Lacerte, CCH, UltraTax, and Drake. We're an early-stage, seed-funded team that spun out of Amazon's AGI org, already in production with paying accounting firms, and backed by tier-1 investors.
We need a CPA who will file returns through our affiliated tax practice, own customer relationships with the firms using our product, and work alongside engineering to make the AI more accurate.
THE ROLE This is not a traditional tax prep role and it's not a pure product role. You'll file real returns, manage real client relationships, and use that experience to improve what we're building.
Tax Practice Prepare and file individual (1040), trust (1041), partnership (1065), S-corp (1120S), and C-corp (1120) returns for mid-market clients through our affiliated tax practice. This is the foundation of the role — real engagements, real complexity.
Customer Success Own customer onboarding and success: lead calls with accounting firms to drive adoption, answer technical questions about product functionality and tax treatment, and build the relationships that drive retention. Translate customer feedback and practitioner pain points into actionable product improvements, working directly with engineering and design. Create and maintain customer-facing documentation, training materials, and support resources grounded in real tax workflows.
Work directly with our engineering team to improve the AI:
Review AI-generated results against your own tax knowledge — validating extractions, identifying logic gaps, and flagging edge cases the system misses
Provide labeled examples and feedback loops that improve accuracy and reliability across entity types and return types
Collaborate with engineers to map form fields, dependencies, and validation logic across tax schemas
Recommend improvements to document intake, review workflows, and client deliverables based on how real firms actually operate
Serve as the tax subject matter expert within a cross-functional AI team — the person who knows whether the output is right, and why
WHO YOU ARE
4+ years of hands-on tax preparation and review experience — ideally across individual, business, and trust returns for mid-market clients. You've prepared and filed 1040s, 1065s, 1120s, and 1120Ss. This isn't a role for someone who's moved away from return work.
Working knowledge of partnership and corporate tax workflows: K-1 processing, basis calculations, multi-state filing
Comfortable using professional tax software (Lacerte, UltraTax, CCH, ProSeries) and curious about how these systems work under the hood
You can explain a complex tax treatment to a firm partner and walk a new user through software with equal clarity
You want to work with engineers and data scientists — not just use the tools they build, but shape them
You're comfortable in a startup where your job title barely scratches the surface of what you actually do
EVEN BETTER IF YOU HAVE
Opinions (strong ones) about CCH Axcess, Lacerte, GoSystem, or UltraTax — and what they get wrong
Deep K-1 experience: footnote handling, Box 20 Code Z, K-3s, cross-entity reconciliation
Deep understanding of tax form structure, common exceptions, and supporting documentation requirements
Familiarity with SurePrep, Gruntworx, SafeSend, or practice management tools like Karbon, Canopy, or TaxDome
Experience in firm operations, CAS workflows, or interest in AI/automation within accounting
Prior experience in product, QA, or customer success at a tech company — especially in tax tech or fintech
Relationships with Top 100 accounting firms
WHY JOIN Early stage, big market. You'll have direct influence on the product, the customer experience, and the company direction. If you're a CPA who wants to help build the tools the profession actually needs, we'd like to talk.
WHAT WE OFFER
$100K–$140K base salary + equity
Health, dental, and vision coverage
In-person work in San Francisco
Direct influence on product and company direction
A team that values craft, clarity, and shipping things that work
