Communications Officer - Sheriff

Overview The Communications Officer performs specialized radio and communications work in high‑stress, traumatic, emotionally charged, and life‑threatening situations. The officer is directly responsible for deploying and monitoring the status and locations of all on‑duty Police, Fire, and EMS units, prioritizing calls, and relaying accurate information to field personnel. The position requires simultaneous multitasking, high accuracy, and efficient use of approved status‑management techniques.

Key Responsibilities

Operate emergency and non‑emergency communication systems; receive requests for service by telephone, obtain and relay necessary information efficiently and accurately, and give callers direction and instruction as necessary.

Operate technical computer systems including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD); enter and retrieve information to/from various databases (TCIC/NCIC, Denton County computer systems, local, regional, and state emergency response databases).

Monitor state and national messages, requests, and transactions through TLETS/NLETS, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws and department policies.

Process, forward, and maintain records of information obtained or entered, maintaining appropriate logs of services requested.

Operate radio console with numerous talk groups; dispatch, monitor, and track multiple law‑enforcement, fire, and EMS agencies.

Ensure radio operations comply with FCC procedures and requirements, monitor all radio traffic, and pre‑alert units while maintaining system compliance.

Dispatch and track units using CAD, radio, and other tools, ensuring timely and accurate service.

Maintain regular and punctual attendance for safe and reliable communication operations.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) license within one year of appointment (Tex. Occ. Code 1701.301; 37 Tex. Admin. Code 217.27).

TCOLE‑approved Basic Telecommunicator course, Crisis Communications course, TDD/TTY for Telecommunicators, and a TCOLE‑approved Field Training Course within one year of assignment (Tex. Occ. Code 1701.405; Tex. Occ. Code 1701.352). Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum age 18 years.

U.S. citizen.

Valid driver’s license; must obtain State of Texas driver’s license within 90 days.
