Organizational Unit Overview
University Communication (UC) translates ECU’s message into strategic and compelling communication and campaigns through the university website, news releases, its official social media, East magazine, storytelling, production of promotional videos and video news stories along with infographics, creation and development of promotional brochures, and annual reports. The purpose is to provide strategic communication and marketing guidance and support to increase the knowledge, understanding, appreciation and support of the University and its work with broad and varied constituencies, from prospective students to identified thought leaders to prospective donors.

Job Duties Strategy, Standards and Content Creation (60%)
Strategically leads social media content, translating ideas into high-impact storytelling through concept development, integrated planning, creative direction, production and post-production.
Uses news stories, photographs, videos, graphics and other tools to advance the university’s mission priorities — including student success, public service and regional transformation — in a creative, dynamic and engaging manner.
Manages ECU’s online reputation, monitoring and reporting/responding to mentions when necessary through real-time alerts.
Utilizes ECU’s social media scheduling and monitoring platform to optimize content and support ECU’s social and digital strategy, growing account following and engagement.
Monitors social media trends to identify and pursue opportunities to explore emerging social media platforms and technology.
Assists with the social media account approval/account creation process and maintaining internal and external account directories while monitoring campus-wide guideline compliance.
Assists with the social media ambassadors program, primarily led by the Social Media Coordinator for Recruitment Strategy, as needed.
Works with ECU’s video team to conceptualize new ideas, trends and audios for social media videos.
Defines and nurtures university brand, voice and personality for each platform to most effectively connect with individual audiences.
Oversees strategic content planning and creation for university leadership social media presences to solidify the university’s mission.
Collaboration and Oversight (30%)
Regularly communicates and collaborates with university partners to promote institutional and college/departmental initiatives, athletic events, campaigns and awards when they align with overall university priorities.
Serves as an institutional representative for online and in-person inquiries, providing professional, timely, and service-oriented customer service across digital and in-person channels.
Directly supports the efforts of the Chancellor’s Division, ECU News Services and University Marketing, providing social media strategy through advising and written plans.
Works with the ECU News Services Manager of Digital Strategy to design and maintain socialmedia.ecu.edu, including written social media policies and guidelines, best practices, annual trainings, campus-wide audits, etc.
Project Coordination and Execution (10%)
Oversees ECU’s Campus Compass weekly event Instagram story program while regulating submissions and weekly newsletter.
Serves on campus committees as a social media advisor as needed.
Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned. Some weekend and evening work is required.
Minimum Education/Experience Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Membership in a professional communications organization.
Volunteer work or previous employment relating to public relations and/or social media, writing, editing, graphic design, and desktop publishing.
Prior experience as a social media manager, public relations coordinator, communications specialist, editor, writer, journalist, copywriter, event planner or project manager.
Extensive knowledge of social media technology/software, writing skills, graphics production and AP Stylebook compliance.
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, EMMA, Sprout Social, Monday.com, photo/video editing, and Giphy.
