
Intercultural Engagement Specialist

Summary
Performs a variety of professional duties required to support community relations and outreach with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) multicultural and multilingual families and communities; assists in the development of communications and placement of content to reach targeted audiences; develops multilingual content across multiple platforms to broaden community outreach and promote inclusivity with FCPS families and communities.
Qualifications Required
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree.
One (1) year of experience in community engagement or public affairs for a large agency, school district, or corporation.
Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
May require work on evenings, holidays, and weekends.
Knowledge of current best practices for community outreach and effective communication with a broad range of stakeholders and diverse audiences.
Knowledge of public education, news media, public relations practices, and crisis communications.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations such as public information, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and ADA compliance.
Familiarity with the various communities FCPS serves and their cultural needs.
Ability to work within a multicultural community, recognizing the sensitive nature of collaborating with people of different cultural backgrounds and expectations.
Proficiency in the use of technology.
Ability to work effectively under pressure, multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and meet tight deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in English and at least one additional language to support engagement with multilingual and multicultural communities.
Preferred
Degree in communications, journalism, or community relations.
Major Duties / Essential Functions
Supports the planning and implementation of an intercultural engagement strategy through community outreach, data collection, and multilingual content development ensuring messaging aligns with Division communication on key topics.
Creates and develops inclusive engagement mechanisms to reach target communities, such as intercultural and multilingual explanatory video content and culturally aware graphics that help to deliver informative and meaningful content to multicultural communities.
Extends outreach efforts to target communities on key issues such as school renaming, boundary changes, program opportunities, and engagement opportunities.
Creates multilingual content for social media posts for multiple FCPS platforms aligned with the Office Community Relations talking points on key topics.
Assists and provides support for media outreach to include interviews with multilingual media outlets.
Creates and maintains a community relation database of key contacts to help communicate the FCPS message, including social media key influencers.
Engages with multicultural community organizations, community members, and social media key influencers to broaden community outreach, increase engagement, and promote FCPS' ability to share its story.
Provides multilingual translation outreach/support for critical messaging during a crisis/emergency and may be on-call and required to work evening, holidays, and weekends.
Collects data to benchmark intercultural community engagement and outreach success across FCPS platforms.
Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
