
Senior Paralegal

Established in 1995, our mission is to provide housing, social services, and a wide variety of targeted programming to families with children, adult couples, and asylum seekers. We use a results-oriented approach to eliminate the barriers to independent living and enable our clients to move into and thrive in permanent housing. We currently operate 17 shelter facilities across three New York City boroughs and have approximately 600 employees.
The Role We are seeking a Senior Paralegal who has not only technical expertise in law and risk but is also a skilled collaborator. This role is the bridge between our legal requirements and our day-to-day shelter operations. You will support the full lifecycle of contracts, regulatory compliance, and litigation and insurance claims tracking, while also helping develop and maintain organizational policies. You will also assist in rolling out and maintaining legal matter management software.
Key Responsibilities 1. Policy Development & Management
Drafting & Implementation : Draft, review, update, and maintain corporate and operational policies in collaboration with other teams, including research to ensure the policies align with any applicable New York City, state or federal law. Review policies maintained by other departments for legal compliance.
Policy Maintenance:
Establish a regular review cycle for relevant internal policies to ensure they remain relevant.
Training:
Develop and present trainings on policies and procedures maintained by the legal department.
2. Contracts, Licenses & Corporate Governance
Contracts: In collaboration with the General Counsel, prepare, negotiate and support the implementation of city contracts, vendor agreements, real estate leases, and other contracts.
Licenses: Manage business licenses and filings to maintain the organization and its subsidiaries in good standing.
Corporate Governance: Assist in maintaining files and supporting corporate governance (bylaws, minutes, etc.).
3. Outside Counsel, Litigation & Insurance Claims Management
Litigation and Subpoena Management: Maintain an internal database for all active cases, support staff in obtaining relevant documentation to respond to subpoenas, and liaise with outside counsel and Department of Homeless Services’ legal department as needed.
Claims Administration: Coordinate, submit and track submission of claims to insurance, including gathering and archiving relevant documentation.
Outside Counsel: Coordinate with outside counsel as needed, obtain pro bono reporting for internal tracking and tax accounting.

Ability to work closely with executive leadership, finance, shelter staff, and HR to ensure contracts and legal policies are practical and responsive to organizational needs.
Communication:
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate a mission-driven environment with empathy and professionalism.
Claims Management : Skill in gathering facts and documentation from staff without being adversarial.
Technical Skills and Requirements
Organization:
Highly organized and able to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
Technical Analysis:
Expertise in reviewing contracts, preferably experience with both government and private sector contracts.
Experience:
7+ years as a corporate paralegal
Tools:
Experience with legal matter management software and document automation tools.
