COMPANY OVERVIEW

In partnership with Compton Unified School District and Tomorrow's Talent, DLR Group is offering a hands-on internship experience for high school students interested in architecture, engineering, and the design of the built environment. DLR Group is an integrated design firm that provides architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design services for projects around the world. The firm is committed to elevating the human experience through design, creating spaces that support learning, healthcare, community, and innovation. Through this internship, students will gain exposure to how real-world design teams collaborate to bring buildings and spaces to life. Interns will have the opportunity to learn from industry professionals, explore design concepts, and see how creative ideas transform into functional environments that serve communities.

JOB SUMMARY

The Architecture Intern will participate in a structured, hands-on learning experience designed to introduce high school students to careers in architecture, engineering, and design. Interns will gain exposure to the design process, observe how multidisciplinary teams collaborate on projects, and explore the tools and technologies used to create and develop buildings. Throughout the internship, students will participate in guided workshops, design activities, and discussions with professionals across the firm. Interns may observe project workflows, contribute to conceptual design exercises, and learn about sustainability, building systems, and construction considerations that influence the built environment.

This role focuses on exploration, learning, and professional development, allowing students to build foundational knowledge while gaining insight into potential career pathways within architecture and related industries.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

In partnership with Compton Unified School District and Tomorrow's Talent, DLR Group is offering a hands-on internship for high school students interested in architecture, engineering, and the design of the built environment. This program introduces students to how buildings and infrastructure are imagined, designed, engineered, and delivered. Interns will explore real project workflows, sustainable design concepts, building systems, and the collaborative roles that architects, engineers, and planners play in shaping spaces where people live, learn, and work. Through studio activities, site tours, design challenges, and professional mentorship, students gain foundational exposure that can lead to future internships, college pathways in architecture or engineering, or early opportunities within the A/E/I (Architecture, Engineering & Interior Design) industry.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Interns will learn to: Understand fundamentals of the built environment, including architectural concepts, structural and MEP systems, sustainability, and design technology. Explore A/E/I career paths through interactions with DLR Group architects, engineers, designers, and project managers. Strengthen awareness of sustainability, energy efficiency, accessibility, and building-code considerations in design. Gain introductory exposure to tools such as SketchUp, Revit, or other industry-standard design software. Build readiness for continued opportunities in design internships, CTE engineering coursework, or college programs. Develop professional skills including teamwork, communication, presentation, and design thinking. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Career Exploration & Learning Engagement

Participate actively in workshops, studio conversations, and hands-on design sessions led by DLR Group professionals. Demonstrate curiosity by asking questions, taking notes, and engaging in discussions about design processes and careers. Field & Facility Participation Attend scheduled site visits or partnered facility tours to observe architecture and engineering concepts in the real world. Follow all safety instructions and adhere to required protocols during site or facility experiences.

Project-Based Learning & Reflection Contribute to design activities such as conceptual sketches, model building, or built-environment observations. Complete a final mini-project or reflection demonstrating understanding of architecture, engineering, and collaboration in the industry.

Professional Skill Development Practice industry-aligned professional behaviors: punctuality, communication, collaboration, and teamwork. Engage respectfully with DLR Group staff and represent CUSD and Tomorrow's Talent positively. Public Speaking and Presenting: During the internship, interns will present and speak on their experience and any projects that have been worked on.

Program Completion Requirements

Be available for the internship duration (final schedule and hours will be provided once confirmed). Participate in orientation, group learning sessions, design activities, and any final showcase or reflection experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Students are encouraged to apply if they: Are enrolled in a Compton USD high school and CTE pathway.Have interest in: Architecture Engineering (structural, mechanical, electrical, civil) Sustainability or environmental design Design technology or digital modeling Construction, project management, or the built environment

Want to learn how buildings are designed, engineered, and constructed. Are willing to participate in hands-on activities and site experiences. Demonstrate curiosity, responsibility, and a willingness to learn - no prior experience required. Work Permit Required. Additional (Not Required): Participation in CTE pathways (Architecture, Engineering, Environmental Science, ICT, Design, etc.) Interest in future internships, mentorships, or summer opportunities in the A/E/I industry.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

This internship is designed to help students build early career awareness while developing skills that support future educational and professional pathways. Interns will have opportunities to: Learn directly from architects, engineers, designers, and project managers about career paths within the A/E/I industry. Participate in mentorship conversations and collaborative design activities that simulate real-world project teamwork. Gain exposure to design technologies and tools commonly used in architecture and engineering. Develop professional skills including communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving. Practice presenting ideas and sharing project reflections with peers and professionals. Build confidence exploring careers in architecture, engineering, sustainability, construction, or design-related fields.

By the end of the internship, students will have a clearer understanding of how the design industry operates and how they can pursue future internships, college programs, or career opportunities in the built environment. WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Studio & Site Experiences Students may experience: Architectural studios and engineering workspaces Observing drawings, models, or digital design tools Possible touring of project sites or learning labs (with full staff supervision)

Safety & Supervision All site visits are fully supervised by DLR Group staff and Tomorrow's Talent team members. Students will receive clear safety guidelines before entering any active or semi-active areas.

Program Conditions Students may stand or walk during tours and should be prepared for varying indoor or outdoor conditions. Closed-toe shoes may be required for site days. Dress code: Business Casual Attire All activities emphasize safety, professionalism, and respect for design and construction environments.
