Symetra is seeking a Director to join our Stop Loss Underwriting Team!

About the role

In this role, you will have Regional Stop Loss Underwriting oversight with Direct Profit/Loss accountability for a block of business exceeding $250M and sales goals of $125M. You will work closely with the AVP/VP of Stop Loss Underwriting to deliver business results.

What you will do

  • Directly accountable for department/product profit targets.
    • Continuously review and evaluate available data to assist with risk decisions, block of business metric targets including but not limited to loss ratio, new business close ratio, renewal rate increases and persistency at the regional, underwriter/RGM level as well as case level.
    • Collaborate with actuarial department regarding manual pricing changes, setting renewal rate increase targets, and manual rate deviation parameters.
    • Quote authority limit (QAL) is as follows: $6m specific premium authority sign-off and $60m aggregate attachment authority.
  • Manage underwriting staff:
    • Hire, develop, mentor, define performance expectations and provide real time performance feedback, and develop goals with and for the team.
    • Assist underwriters with their decisions on complex and or high premium cases.
    • Review competitive data and appeals from sales and develop appropriate responses.
    • Foster creative decision making to balance sound underwriting principles with desired premium growth.
    • Address any individual performance or developmental issues and either manage up or manage out.
    • Mentor and provide underwriting oversight to Underwriting Regional Group Managers in Field Sales.
    • Provide Second Signoff up to QAL levels and for exceptions to underwriting guidelines.
  • Participate on broker, producer, and client calls and/or face-to-face meetings.
  • Understand business drivers and think strategically.
  • Successfully convey and implement company goals and philosophy.
  • Foster positive relationships between underwriting and field staff.
  • Consult on interdepartmental issues.
  • Control expenses by supervising productivity while fostering innovation.
  • Underwrite New Business Quotes and/or Renewals as needed.

Compensation

Salary Range: $128,700-$214,600 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who You Are

  • A minimum of a 4-year college degree or equivalent combination of education and business experience.
  • 8+ years of Stop Loss Underwriting experience required.
  • Prior leadership experience required.
  • Mastery of underwriting principles and practices.
  • Service oriented with commitment to meet deadlines, prioritize, and handle multiple tasks in a demanding work environment.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and written.
  • Strong collaboration and negotiation skills.
  • Some occasional travel required.

Travel:

Required Training & Professional Development
All newly hired people leaders with direct reportsare required tocomplete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra's corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington.Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
