Job Summary The Lead Urban Designer is responsible for
driving design vision
across urban planning and design projects, leading initiatives from concept through delivery. This role combines strategic leadership, creative design, and stakeholder engagement to deliver innovative urban solutions across California-based projects. The position requires deep expertise in urban design, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced studio environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead urban design projects including specific plans, master plans, and community plans
Drive design concepts through visioning, site analysis, feasibility studies, and strategy development
Mentor and guide junior team members within the Urban Design + Planning Studio
Develop 2D and 3D visualizations including site plans, renderings, and simulations
Prepare graphically rich reports and presentations using design tools
Lead community engagement efforts including workshops and outreach initiatives
Support business development activities including proposals and client relationship management
Collaborate across disciplines such as environmental planning and climate action
Required Experience
12–15 years of
urban design and planning experience
in a consulting environment
Advanced knowledge of California urban planning practices including housing, mixed-use, and transit-oriented development
Experience managing complex projects and leading cross-functional teams
Strong presentation and storytelling skills for client and community engagement
Proficiency in design and modeling tools including AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, PowerPoint, and Excel
Nice-to-Have Experience
Advanced knowledge of Lumion or similar rendering tools
Experience with form-based codes, zoning, and design standards
Background in sustainability or climate-focused planning
