The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Substation Designer functions in a senior lead engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, the role modifies or creates deliverables and performs assignments of a design nature by applying basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop complex design concepts. The intern will provide technical guidance and may direct other engineering professionals. The ideal candidate will have advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS) and advanced experience with physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS).
Key Responsibilities
Pro-activate and provide guidance and direction by using knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes and Black & Veatch policies and procedures.
Review project requirements and accurately determine the correct format and contents of required deliverables.
Promote quality within project/group/section.
Review design inputs to ensure consistency.
Assist to ensure deliverables are in compliance with specific codes and standards suitable for the project.
Manage drawing control and historical records using the appropriate method as established by the project.
Demonstrate personal accuracy and drive continual improvement and change management efforts.
Apply basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.
Make judgmental decisions regarding deliverables and input interpretation.
Handle difficult technical assignments within area of expertise and provide technical guidance to other professionals.
Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and records.
Use advanced applications (e.g., modeling and design software) in performance of work provided.
Review deliverables of others.
Define work assignments and maintain schedules.
Program control systems or participate in plant start-up activities associated with specialized areas of expertise.
Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
Support field activities as needed.
Communicate project design requirements, progress, and schedules.
Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers and determine key clients in some instances.
Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns.
Assist discipline or department management in developing and communicating appropriate design standards and process improvement activities.
Identify training and development needs for personnel supervised.
Be recognized for expertise in one or more areas.
Assist with performance management process, recognition, and corrective actions.
Participate in career planning and learning and development.
Supervise engineering technicians, including mentoring, instructing, delegating work and providing feedback.
Assist in monitoring staffing levels and available skill sets for project(s).
Assist in identifying resource application needs and process requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology.
Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology.
Typically a minimum of 8–11 years related work experience.
Preferred Non‑Technical Skills: Learning on the Fly, Problem Solving, Perseverance, Patience, Time Management, Drive for Results, Self Development, Listening, Informing.
Preferred Technical Skills: Use of the appropriate electronic applications and programs required for performing assignments (e.g., CADD, other electronic applications, information modeling and document storage systems).
Advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS).
Advanced experience with physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS).
Intermediate knowledge of schematics, wiring, and panel fronts.
Advanced knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control, departmental guides and B&V policies and procedures.
Intermediate industry knowledge and technology trends.
Advanced knowledge of other disciplines.
Basic knowledge of construction & constructability practices & principles.
Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides related to assigned engineering discipline.
Basic knowledge of procurement & contract administration.
