About This Role HBK Engineering is seeking a Field Specialist for our Chicago office. This position combines advanced technical surveying expertise with specialized knowledge and training responsibilities. The role involves utilizing sophisticated surveying equipment to collect accurate field data while executing various types of surveys including topographic, boundary, construction layout, and as‑built surveys. The position requires extensive experience in data processing and analysis, along with the ability to offer technical expertise to project teams and develop training programs for survey techniques and software usage.
What You’ll Do
Utilize surveying equipment (GPS, total stations, levels) to collect accurate field data with precision
Execute various types of surveys including topographic, boundary, construction layout, and as‑built surveys
Gather, process, and analyze data on land features, elevations, distances, and angles using specialized software
Create detailed maps, plans, and cross‑sections using computer‑aided design (CAD) software
Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing survey findings and recommendations
Offer technical expertise to project teams, including engineers, architects, and construction managers
Conduct site assessments and provide recommendations for optimal survey strategies
Troubleshoot survey‑related problems and propose effective solutions
Develop and conduct training programs on survey techniques, data analysis, and software usage
Provide mentorship and guidance to junior field staff and technicians
Move about on construction work sites, public streets, and parkways safely and efficiently
Communicate effectively with diverse project teams and stakeholders
Ensure compliance with surveying standards and best practices
What You’ll Bring
High school diploma or GED certificate
Bachelor’s degree preferred
10+ years of construction support, field data collection and coordination, or surveying experience
Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license preferred
Valid driver’s license (CDL not required)
Knowledge of total station survey equipment and GPS survey equipment operations
Knowledge of infrastructure and public right‑of‑ways
Self‑motivated and proactive attitude with good interpersonal communication skills
Ability to effectively communicate with diverse teams and stakeholders
Physical capability to move about on construction work sites, public streets, and parkways
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time
Ability to sit, kneel, and squat on a daily basis with minimal frequency of kneeling and squatting
Hand‑eye coordination necessary to operate surveying equipment and take measurements
Ability to perform outdoor standing and/or walking work every day
