Position Summary The Producer for Music Podcasts oversees the planning, recording, editing, and publication of music-related podcasts within the Music Department. This role is responsible for producing New Music Dispatch and supporting the development of additional podcast projects as they are created. The Producer works closely with the Music Director and Podcast Director to coordinate episode content, manage production timelines, and ensure podcasts are properly edited, published, and distributed across platforms. This position also plays a key role in shaping the tone, structure, and consistency of music podcast content while mentoring contributors and supporting collaborative production efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Podcast Production: Oversee end-to-end production of New Music Dispatch, including planning, recording, editing, and publishing episodes.
Content Planning: Work with the Music Director and contributors to develop episode topics, rundowns, and segment ideas that reflect Impact 89FM’s music coverage.
Workflow Management: Establish and maintain consistent production timelines to ensure episodes are completed and published by established deadlines.
Consistent Publishing Schedule: Ensure New Music Dispatch is produced and released on a consistent weekly schedule.
Audio Editing & Quality Control: Edit and mix podcast episodes to ensure high production quality, clarity, and consistency across all music podcasts.
Collaboration & Coordination: Coordinate with hosts, contributors, and other staff members to ensure smooth recording sessions and content development.
Podcast Development: Support the creation and growth of additional music podcast initiatives as they are developed within the department.
Publishing & Distribution: Prepare and publish podcast episodes, including writing descriptions, titles, and metadata optimized for digital platforms.
Digital Integration: Collaborate with the Digital Team to support promotion and distribution of podcast content.
Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Podcast Director to ensure all podcasts are properly edited, finalized, and distributed across platforms.
Training & Mentorship: Provide guidance to staff members contributing to music podcasts, including hosting, production, and editing best practices.
Content Standards: Ensure all podcast content aligns with Impact 89FM’s editorial voice, brand, and programming goals.
Technical Troubleshooting: Address technical issues related to recording, editing, and publishing podcast content.
Compliance: Ensure all content adheres to FCC regulations, copyright laws, and station policies.
Basic Requirements
Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at Michigan State University.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Timely communication skills (responses expected within 24 hours during the standard work week).
Interest in music, audio storytelling, and podcast production.
Willingness to work non‑business hours as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience at Impact 89FM or another media organization.
Familiarity with the station’s mission, vision, and values.
Experience with audio production software (Audacity, Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, etc.).
Experience producing or contributing to podcasts.
Strong understanding of music genres and trends aligned with Impact 89FM’s format.
Experience writing digital content such as show notes or social media copy.
