Position: Senior News Producer for The Undercurrent
Impact 89FM is seeking a dedicated and detail‑oriented student to serve as the Senior News Producer for The Undercurrent. This leadership role is essential in producing and hosting the station’s biweekly audio storytelling journalism show, ensuring high journalistic standards, and delivering engaging and thought‑provoking content for broadcast and digital platforms. The Senior News Producer works closely with the News Director to oversee the production of The Undercurrent and maintain its editorial integrity.

Position Summary The Senior News Producer for The Undercurrent leads the production of Impact 89FM’s flagship newsmagazine program by hosting, scripting, editing, and preparing content for broadcast. The Undercurrent is an in‑depth audio storytelling show that explores significant topics relevant to the Michigan State University and East Lansing communities through investigative reporting, interviews, and research. This role involves curating compelling stories, collaborating with station leadership, and ensuring that each episode aligns with Impact 89FM’s editorial mission. The Senior News Producer also works with reporters and volunteers to record the show, develop narrative‑driven journalism, and optimize content for both radio and digital distribution.
Key Responsibilities
Show Production & Hosting – Serve as the primary host and producer of The Undercurrent, ensuring high‑quality content is delivered for broadcast every other week.
Direct Reports – Oversee and manage the News Producers.
Story Development – Research, pitch, and curate engaging stories that provide deep analysis and unique perspectives on important community topics.
News Content Management – Select, script, and edit discussion topics for inclusion in each episode, ensuring accuracy and journalistic integrity.
Interview Coordination – Identify and schedule relevant guests, including experts, community leaders, and individuals with personal connections to the featured topics.
Audio Editing & Delivery – Edit and finalize The Undercurrent episodes, delivering ready‑for‑broadcast files to the Program Director by established deadlines.
Collaboration & Coordination – Work with the Podcast Director and Digital Team to ensure the podcast version of The Undercurrent is properly edited and distributed across platforms.
Compliance – Ensure all show content follows AP style, ethical journalism standards, FCC regulations, and Impact 89FM’s editorial guidelines.
Technical Troubleshooting – Resolve any technical issues related to production, including audio recording and editing software.
Fact‑Checking & Verification – Ensure all names, statistics, and factual information are accurate before publication.
Content Promotion – Collaborate with the Digital Team to promote The Undercurrent across social media and Impact 89FM’s website.
Workflow Management – Maintain structured workflows to ensure timely production, review, and publication of content.
On‑Call Responsibility – Serve as the first point of contact for technical issues related to FM operations during assigned Director on Duty weekends.
Event Support – Represent Impact 89FM at journalism‑related events and assist with news‑related initiatives.
Competitions & Recognition – Assist in gathering and submitting entries for state and national journalism competitions.
Basic Requirements
Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at Michigan State University.
Strong editing, mentoring, and communication skills.
Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Proficiency in AP style and digital editing best practices.
Experience with news writing, reporting, and investigative journalism.
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Audition, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere) and audio editing tools.
Knowledge of multimedia storytelling, including long‑form investigative journalism and podcast production.
Excellent communication skills with timely response expectations during the work week.
Willingness to work outside regular hours, including early mornings or late evenings, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience at Impact 89FM or another media organization.
Leadership experience and familiarity with the station’s mission, vision, and values.
Familiarity with WordPress website content management system.
Understanding of SEO, digital audience engagement, and content strategy.
Successful completion of coursework in journalism and broadcasting.
