
Federal Relations Summer Intern

The University of Alaska Federal Relations Summer Internship offers an immersive, paid 10‑week experience ($18.20 /hr) in Washington, D.C. for UA system undergraduate students from any discipline who are eager to learn about federal policy, government relations, and public service. The program immerses interns in the federal legislative process, providing direct exposure to congressional operations, high‑level policy meetings, and advocacy for the University of Alaska’s future.
Responsibilities
Integrate fully into the UA federal relations team and work directly from the Washington, D.C. office.
Advocate for UA’s priorities by collaborating closely with the Alaska Congressional Delegation, U.S. Senate and House of Representatives committees, and various federal agencies.
Attend congressional hearings, policy briefings, and meetings relevant to UA priorities.
Assist in projects, research, and administrative tasks as assigned by the Assistant Director of Federal Relations.
Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled undergraduate student at one of the three universities in the UA system.
Strong interest in government relations or federal policy.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Detail‑oriented and willing to undertake administrative tasks.
Capable of working independently and as part of a small, fast‑paced team.
Position Details Full‑time, 10‑week, non‑exempt temporary position in the UA Office of Government Relations, Federal Relations, Washington, D.C.
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly rate: averaged $18.20 /hr, compliant with pre‑ and post‑July 2026 D.C. minimum wage requirements.
Full‑time paid stipend at D.C. minimum wage rate.
Covered Washington Intern Student Housing.
Round‑trip flight costs to Washington, D.C. provided.
Academic Credit The chosen applicant is responsible for requesting course credit for this internship through their academic department. The Assistant Director of Federal Relations will coordinate any required affiliate agreement or internship contract.
