Description
The Director/Senior Director of Electronic and Software Systems is responsible for how EBR’s electronics, firmware, and software work together as a single system. This role ensures that our electrical and software designs are clear, scalable, and well-integrated, both for current products and future generations. The Director/Senior Director leads engineering managers and senior technical staff, sets system architecture direction, and works closely with Hardware, Program Management, Product Support, and Quality/Regulatory. The role balances delivering today’s products with building a strong technical foundation for the future.
Essential And Other Duties And Responsibilities
System Architecture and Technical Strategy
- Define and steward system-level architecture across electrical engineering, firmware, and software domains.
- Establish architectural principles, standards, and guardrails aligned with product and technology strategy.
- Lead cross-program electrical and software architectural consistency and technical decision‑making.
- Resolve cross‑domain technical trade‑offs in collaboration with mechanical engineering and hardware development.
Platform Roadmap and Modernization
- Define and maintain a roadmap for electronic and software platforms.
- Identify and prioritize technical debt across EE and software domains.
- Develop modernization strategies that balance innovation, regulatory requirements, risk, and delivery constraints.
- Define platform reuse strategies and technical standards across product lines.
- Forecast future technical capabilities required to support product strategy.
Organizational Leadership and Talent Development
- Provide leadership for electrical engineering, firmware, and software teams, including managers and senior technical leaders.
- Develop technical leaders and architects within each discipline.
- Scale engineering capability through delegation, architectural empowerment, and modern engineering practices.
- Maintain periodic technical engagement to inform leadership decisions without becoming a bottleneck to execution.
Design Control and QMSR Alignment
- Own EE and software‑related DDF/DHF remediation to align with lean QMSR expectations under ISO 13485.
- Ensure compliant but lean traceability between system architecture decisions, design inputs, risks, and verification/validation artifacts.
- Partner with Hardware Development and Quality/Regulatory to modernize SW design control practices while minimizing unnecessary documentation burden.
- Support risk management and design control activities in regulated product development.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Hardware Development to define system partitioning and interface boundaries.
- Collaborate with Program Management to ensure architectural risks and trade‑offs are visible in program plans and by key cross‑functional stakeholders.
- Engage with Product Support Engineering to ensure field learnings inform future system architecture.
- Support VP R&D in architectural resolution when system‑level decisions impact product strategy.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly manage engineering managers and senior technical leaders within electrical engineering, firmware, and software.
- Indirectly lead multidisciplinary engineering teams through architectural leadership and technical governance.
- Responsible for performance management, talent development, and organizational scaling within respective domain.
Qualifications
Education and Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field required.
- Minimum of 12 years of experience in electrical engineering, software engineering, firmware, or systems engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, including managers and senior technical staff.
- Experience defining and governing system architecture in complex hardware–software products.
- Experience working in regulated product development environments (medical device experience preferred).
Equivalent combinations of education and professional experience will be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep understanding of system architecture across electrical, firmware, and software domains.
- Ability to balance long‑term technical strategy with near‑term execution realities.
- Strong leadership, communication, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
- Experience with common platform‑based architectures and multi‑generation technology roadmaps.
- Knowledge of ISO 13485, QMSR, design controls, and risk management frameworks preferred.
- Strong ability to evaluate technical trade‑offs and guide architectural decision‑making.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to scale teams and develop technical leaders.
- Strong cross‑functional and executive communication skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically (2‑5 trips per year) and internationally (1‑2 trips per year), which may include overnight and weekend travel.
- Required to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms.
- Required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 20 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Subject to extended periods of sitting and/or standing, vision to monitor, and moderate noise levels.
Salary Range
$173,000 - $276,100*
Base pay is one part of your total compensation. The salary offered will depend on several factors, including, but not limited to your experience, knowledge, skills, location, internal equity, and market alignment. Additional compensation may include bonuses and equity, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
