The Executive Director (ED) of the Humane Society of Wilkes (HSOW) provides visionary, operational, and financial leadership for the organization. The ED is responsible for overall management of shelter operations, staff and volunteer leadership, fundraising, community relations, and strategic growth while ensuring the humane care and placement of animals in Wilkes County. The ED is the public face and chief administrator of the HSOW and works collaboratively with the Board of Directors, county officials, donors, veterinarians, and community partners to promote our mission. HSOW Mission Statement:

The Humane Society of Wilkes is an independent, 501(c)(3), volunteer organization dedicated to reducing the number of homeless, unwanted, and neglected companion animals in Wilkes County, NC. We support pet owners and prospective owners with programs that promote adoption and spay/neuter, and services that provide information and resources to the community. The ED reports to the HSOW Board of Directors. Key Responsibilities:

Execute the mission, vision, and strategic priorities established by the HSOW Board of Directors. Serve as the primary liaison between the Board, staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders. Develop long-term operational and financial strategies to ensure organizational sustainability. Work with local and state officials, as well as the architect, contractor, and others, regarding the renovation of the newly purchased building, which will house our first animal shelter. Once the shelter is open, manage the shelter as required to maintain animal health, cleanliness, facility requirements, and hire and oversee the staff and volunteers of the shelter. Build partnerships with Wilkes County government, law enforcement, veterinarians, and animal control. Promote public education programs related to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. Represent the HSOW at community events, media engagements, and public meetings. Attend all monthly Board of Directors meetings and other meetings as needed. Provide monthly updates at Board of Directors meetings. Qualifications:

REQUIRED

Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business administration, public administration, animal science, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Minimum of 2 years of leadership or management experience, preferably in a nonprofit, animal welfare, or public service setting. Demonstrated experience managing budgets and supervising staff. Strong fundraising, grant writing, and donor relations experience. Strong motivational, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Self-motivated and the ability to work alone and with others. Valid and unrestricted driver’s license. PREFERRED

Experience working in an animal shelter or humane society environment. Knowledge of North Carolina animal welfare laws and regulations. Experience working with a volunteer-driven organization. Master’s degree or nonprofit leadership certification. Working Conditions:

A combination of office, shelter, and community-based work. Must be able to handle emotionally challenging situations related to animal welfare. Occasional evenings and weekends required for events, emergencies, or meetings. Must be comfortable working in a shelter environment with animals. Equal Opportunity Statement:
