
Recreation Specialist II

The Recreation Specialist II is responsible for promoting, organizing, coordinating, supervising and conducting physical activities for individuals and groups. Duties might include organizing community events, preparing, maintaining equipment, maintaining baseball fields, assisting in planning after school activities, coordinating league activities, officiating at sporting events, and recommending and implementing exercise programs.
Supervise youth in recreation activities, including the activities of the Summer Youth program and the Arts & Crafts program.
Coordinate and facilitate activities for adult team athletics.
Monitor the general usage of the facilities and assists in maintaining a clean, safe environment.
Officiate and score keep for Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Volleyball, as well as other team sports.
Assist in maintaining schedules for all athletic fields on the reservation.
Participate in community-wide special events and education programs designed to prevent and control diabetes
Ensure preparation for scheduled activities and events are carried out.
Maintain inventory of recreation equipment, supplies, and facility furnishings; notify supervisor of needed materials, equipment, and supplies.
Assist program participants and the public; provide information regarding facility programs, policies, and procedures.
Actively collaborate with Diabetes Outreach and Fitness staff on education, activities, and events.
Assist the Fitness and Physical Activity Coordinator in training the Recreation Specialist I.
Transport youth to organized activities and utilizes tribal and GSA vehicles for site preparations.
Attend trainings as required.
Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.
Knowledge of:
Recreation and fitness practices and principles; Various fitness equipment; Basic techniques of CPR, First Aid, and implementation universal precautions procedures; Training and education principles; Customer service principles; Recordkeeping principles; Various recreational activities such as: sports, arts, crafts, etc.: Large and small group recreation activity planning, organization and implementation: Report preparation techniques; Tribal resources; Basic diabetes prevention strategies; Policies and procedures for safeguarding confidential information; Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn. Skills and Abilities:
Encourage and motivate groups to actively participate in recreational activities; Proper lifting techniques; Use of blood pressure cuff; Take measurements for weight, height, physical agility and record them appropriately Manage and execute multiple tasks; Explain use and care of fitness equipment; Maintain files and records; Stand, walk and run for long periods of time; Prepare and proofread a variety of reports and/or documentation; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and tribal members. Apply and explain applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and/or procedures; Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications; Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions. High School Diploma or GED plus two (2) years of experience working with youth and/or adults in a recreational setting: and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Special Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License; Group Fitness Trainer Certification and/or Water Safety Instructor Certification; One class in coaching completed with a passing grade (equivalent to the class taught at PCC); This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends; Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination from this position.
