Park City Opera is currently looking for a Set Designer to join our production team for Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette this summer.
Job Title Set Designer
Job Summary The Set Designer is responsible for creating the scenic design for Park City Opera’s non-union production of Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the Eccles Center. The role involves developing a cohesive visual environment that supports the dramatic narrative, musical structure, and emotional arc of the opera. Working in close collaboration with the Stage Director, Lighting Designer, Costume Designer, and production team, the Set Designer translates the artistic vision into a practical, safe, and effective scenic design appropriate to the Eccles Center and the scale of a smaller opera company.

Design process begins as early as February 2026
Tech Week:
August 17th-August 20th
Performances:
August 21st and August 23rd
Total Stipend:
$600-$1,000 depending on experience
Key Responsibilities
Develop an original scenic design concept
that reflects the artistic vision and themes of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette
Create design materials
such as sketches, renderings, ground plans, elevations, and/or models as required
Design scenery appropriate
to the technical capabilities, dimensions, and sightlines of the Eccles Center
Collaborate closely with the Stage Director, conductor, and design team
to ensure visual and dramaturgical cohesion
Work within the budgetary, technical, and scheduling constraints
of a small, non-union opera company
Attend design meetings, rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals
as required
Coordinate with technical staff, scenic shops, and stage management
regarding construction, load‑in, installation, and strike
Ensure that all scenic elements meet safety standards
and support performer movement, staging, and vocal projection
Be available to address notes
and make adjustments throughout the rehearsal and performance process
Qualifications
Sufficient experience in the technical and artistic elements of set design
Familiarity with rehearsal room etiquette and production protocols
Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as required by the rehearsal and performance schedule
Preferred Skills
Previous work on operatic productions and passion for the medium is a plus
This position is essential in creating a beautiful and impactful production. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic collaborator, a problem‑solver, and a good communicator.
