Job Summary The Designer Sr. produces and reviews design drawings, schematics, and documentation for gas, coal, and renewable retrofit and new generation projects. Working under the direction of the Designer Principal or engineering leads, the role applies Engineering Services standards and EPC specifications to create accurate, constructible designs, supports vendor/OEM submittal reviews, and provides field design support during construction and commissioning. The Designer Sr. participates in stakeholder design reviews, contributes to document control and as built deliverables, and helps ensure designs meet requirements for constructability, operability, maintainability, and safety (COMS).

Job Description Key Responsibilities

Produce and revise detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and 3D model elements for mechanical, civil, structural, and electrical systems.

Apply EPC and Engineering Services specifications to ensure design compliance and constructability.

Review vendor drawings and RFx deliverables and prepare technical comments for senior staff.

Support COMS by identifying access, maintenance, and safety issues in drawings and models.

Provide construction phase support: design clarifications, punch‑list items, and as‑built updates.

Maintain and archive project documentation, drawings, and descriptive articles.

Coordinate with AE/EPC teams and internal engineers to resolve design integration items.

Assist with training coordination and documentation practices as needed.

Knowledge & Skills

Ability to read, produce, and verify P&IDs, schematics, and construction drawings.

Good attention to detail and accuracy with emphasis on constructability and site requirements.

Effective verbal and written communication for coordination with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders.

Familiarity with documentation standards and electronic archiving.

Basic understanding of safety and regulatory compliance in design.

Working Conditions

Approximately 25% travel, including day trips and overnight stays (up to a week or more).

Work in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, and operating machinery.

Mandatory safety gear required at generating stations: hard hat, eye/hearing protection, steel‑toed shoes with heels and non‑slip soles.

Adherence to site‑specific safety requirements is mandatory.

Designation – onsite / in the office everyday when not traveling for work What You’ll Do

Plan and coordinate daily work routines as required to maintain efficient production.

Create, revise and maintain detailed engineering and record drawings, and sketches.

Create, revise and maintain material and property equipment records.

Obtain information required to perform work from verbal communication, sketches, marked drawings, listings, field notes, vendors' catalogs technical reference manuals and site visits.

Perform mathematical calculations required to accomplish assigned work.

Proficiency in the use of computer aided design software.

Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software.

Check work performed by other personnel for accuracy and compliance with all Company standards and methods. Work with other organizations of the company to coordinate the work and assure that it is performed in a safe and efficient manner.

Read vendors' prints, shop and other drawings and equipment operating instructions, and incorporate that information into assigned work.

Prepare study layouts, designs and original working drawings in accordance with AEP standard practice.

Check designs for strength or conformity to accepted standards and methods.

Check manufacturers' prints and shop drawings and other drawings necessary to coordinate work with that of others and with the overall design.

Prepare and check bills of material when required. Specify and write purchase requisitions when required.

Make cost estimates when required.

Furnish work direction and assist in training of employees in related work at an equal or lower level as directed.

Assist employees of higher classification as required.

Promote and support the Company's Accident Prevention and Safety and Health programs.

Demonstrate ethical behavior as outlined in the AEP corporate policies.

Support the AEP Corporate Compliance policies.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What We’re Looking For Education : Associate’s degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering technology and 4 years of equivalent experience.

Equivalent experience

without AAS degree - high school graduate and 8 years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with gas, coal, and renewable energy projects or utility construction.

Certification in CAD/3D modeling tools.

Familiarity with EPC/RFx processes and vendor submittal reviews.

Design experience in power generation, construction, or industrial projects.

Proficiency with CAD and 3D modeling tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, PDMS/AVEVA, or similar).

Working knowledge of mechanical, civil, structural, and electrical drawings and EPC documentation.

Other Requirements Physical demand level is Sedentary.

Must be proficient in working with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and have the ability to distinguish colors.

Note: Some noted requirements are mutually exclusive with regard to each specific discipline.

Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law. This position may require shift work or overtime. Occasional overnight travel to and work within a substation or power plant environment in obedience to all safety regulations and use of personal protection equipment.

What You’ll Get Base Salary: ($30.53 - $37.98/hour) = ($64K - $79K/year)
